There's nothing I enjoy more than a meaningful conversation, especially with those who are committed to challenging the status quo to create what is even better. That's why I volunteered to lead the Toronto chapter of the Advance Innovation Society. It's a unique international network of high achievers, both corporate and entrepreneurial, who are committed to innovation themselves and to sharing their insights and experience with fellow innovators. Many of the Advance events are virtual, allowing members to participate in events and build networks around the world. We also meet in person locally or by visiting any of the chapters around the world. Last night, I held our monthly Toronto chapter event at #Verity, the wonderful private women's club in downtown Toronto. Although our last event was comprised mostly of men, this one was a group of remarkable women. Each one shared what compelled her to innovate and the difference it's made: a charity that educates and certifies girls to install solar roofing in Nigeria and beyond, even Afghanistan; going far "outside the box" to address soaring rates of pancreatic cancer by giving vital support to neglected firefighters and raise more funding for research in return; creating a new talent-related process in a multi-national that replaced both the existing one and those mismanaging it; creating a foundation to address those who often get misdiagnosed with Alzheimer's while also running a company that brings the wellness and balance of the Mediterranean lifestyle home and abroad; and an investor who only invests in disruptors because she admires those who have the courage to challenge the status quo. Data from #TheBigDeal has shown that female-founded startups in Africa raised only 2% of total funds in 2023 despite significant success and contributions to the ecosystem. These insights reinforce the huge need for immediate action to incorporate a gender lens into investment decision-making and strategies.
