WHAT’S IT LIKE TO WORK WITH GEN Y 🧐 (From a POV of Gen Z) 💼 It has been 2 months since my first working day at Vietnam branch of Alibaba.com - an ecommerce marketplace platform headquartered in Hangzhou, China. Among many new things to me, I have to say I’m quite surprised about my mentor Uyen Le 💃🏻 - Not because she taught me practical skills that I have never known for process improvement during our training session ✍🏻 - Not because she always finds way to cheer us up even in our sleepiest day 💤 - Also not because she brings us delicious food that Ngoc Binh Cao, Thien Dao and me gained a lot of weight (but we enjoy eating them all) 🍽️ The way she addressing us is what I wanna talk about 👀 she call us “bro” and “sis” despite the fact that we are all fresh graduate/ fourth year student 😂 Due to this weird style of her, we easily to communicate the problems we are facing. Thus, it’s more productive for her to help us overcome our challenge to achieve a better results from week to week 👩🏻💻. Overall, my time in the Talent Acquisition team of Vietnam Alibaba.com helped me gain critical skillset in a short duration 🏆 which is my initial goal that I shared with her in our interview. 💗 For those who are reading this line, be corporate slay and stay healthy guys, we all deserve a funny mentor so every working day is a humorous day (yet stressful). 📷: You can see this is one of our relaxing gathering sessions with Ms. Chuan Gao (I don’t remember the specific number, because there are so many)

We’re back for another ‘Three Questions’! 🎤 We chatted to Saufi Mohd Nor, one of our Social Media Managers, about the significance of Ramadan and Eid 🌙 Q: What does Ramadan mean to you? A: Ramadan means more than just fasting—it's a time for self-reflection and growth. Despite being a foodie, I embrace the challenge of fasting, finding it a lesson in patience and discipline. It would be nice to have some matcha latte while working, but it's only for 30 days and is reaching its end now, and I already can't wait for Ramadan next year. Ramadan encourages me to prioritise meaningful connections with loved ones and myself. It's a time to cleanse physically, emotionally, and mentally. Ultimately, Ramadan allows me to slow down, realign my priorities, and emerge as a better version of myself. Q: How are you celebrating Eid this year? A: This Eid, I'm heading back to Ipoh, my hometown and also Michelle Yeoh’s (we are not neighbours, but I wish!), just a few hours away from Kuala Lumpur, to celebrate with the family. We'll deck out in our best outfits for morning prayers at the mosque, then gather with our family members over delicious Malaysian food like ketupat and chicken rendang. And, of course, there's a special treat—chicken bakso (meatball soup), a nod to our family's Indonesian lineage. We live in the social media age, so Eid OOTD shots are a must throughout the day. In Malaysia, we also have a 'duit raya' culture, which directly translates to 'Eid money'—like Christmas gift-giving, but we give money to elders and kids in the family. It's always a blast seeing their reactions, though I sometimes miss being on the receiving end. But hey, it's all about family and tradition, making every moment memorable! Q: How can employers better support their employees during Ramadan? A: Employers can better support their employees during Ramadan by embracing flexibility. At The Adaptavist Group, we're fortunate to have a culture that values flexibility, allowing me to work from home while fasting in Malaysia's scorching heat. The little things also matter, such as ensuring Muslim team members have enough time to break their fast, especially for teams that work across different time zones. In the Kuala Lumpur office, it's really fun when team members from various religions and cultural backgrounds celebrate Ramadan and Eid together. These efforts help foster a more inclusive work environment. #TheAdaptavistGroup #ThreeQuestions #EidMubaraj #Eid2024

𝐆𝐑𝐌 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐭 'If we give them a fish, We feed them for a day. If we teach them to fish, We feed them for a lifetime.' We have activated students from TIDREC @ UM of Malaysia, giving them the opportunity to upskill themselves and learn a holistic set of skills for their future careers. Special thanks to PRAVENA K of Virtual Assistance Asia (Our GRM Ambassador) for connecting us to TIDREC@UM. Academic knowledge is important but we recognize many fields are becoming ever increasingly competitive. To be successful in this tough environment, candidates for jobs have to bring along a “competitive edge” that distinguishes them from other candidates with similar qualifications and comparable evaluation results. GRM provided these students to take their first step toward a brighter and more competitive future through ReSkills. [Putra Daerah: Perks and Challenges] "Putra daerah" is a term you've often heard if you were born, bred, and/or has a bloodline in a certain region (except for Jakarta due to its diversity). While this status can apply for anyone, putra daerah is often reserved for people who are respected in their region. Most of the time, putra daerah are respected for their executive, financial, and/or educational prowess. They have the power to change their region in their area of expertise. While these gives someone extra privileges for any putra daerah, they also encountered many challenges. The first one is expectations. Being the role model of their citizen, putra daerah must bear huge weight on their shoulders and deliver for them. They might also have aspirations that are unrelated with their region, and might feel guilty on pursuing it. Next is adjusting standards. Putra daerah who went to bigger cities might compare that city to their region. Higher standards, when done best, can bring forth positive change, and on the other side, can make someone arrogant and prone to disappointment. The last one is being taken advantage of. Putra daerah are deemed as the best people in the region. They are often treated as an all-knowing person and, in turn, getting jobs that is proven to be beyond their expertise. This can lead into burnout and less than optimal results. In a diverse country like Indonesia, putra daerah is a common yet unique phenomenon. They can be agents of change if they know their strengths and limitations, and create impact on their environment.

I wish I knew this when I was a young professional... When I left Mindanao in the mid 90s to work here in Manila, I was a kid raring to go. With gritted teeth and hope-filled eyes, I took the flight from Davao to Manila thinking - "Wait till I show you Manila who is the best". I was ready to work hard. I was ready to show what I could do. My confidence came from a good background in academics and significant success as a student. My student life culminated with a Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines award. I believed I had reason to be confident. My first major task was to organize a national conference. I was thrilled. I worked on it with everything I got. I worked extremely hard to show my bosses I could do it. I barely slept the week before the event. When D-day came, there were a lot of loose ends that came undone. My boss was sympathetic but was far from impressed. She had these important words for me during the post-mortem - "Marc you can't do these things alone. You can't do a major event trying to do everything. This is not a school project. You have to form and lead a good team." That was a major slap to my young arrogant, ignorant, face. I survived my first event with severely bruised ego. I was 21, I had so much to learn. That experience made me realize that while being first in school means success, at work- being first TOGETHER is the key. Being competitive drives good grades, at work- being competitive drives teammates away. Doing everything well alone in school can be done, at work-everything could fall-apart without a good team to collaborate with. I had to learn to be humble, to trust, and have the ability to work happy even when I am not the one on stage. Unlike school, success in the real world does not mean a round medal around my neck, it is a round pizza or pancit bilao shared after a major project completed. "Be very nice, enjoy being with people, just like Charlie" #leadership #teamwork #careergrowth #projectmanagement

🌟 Mission Accomplished!🌟 A not-so-long and not-so-short 3 weekends stretch event ends perfectly (with great weather)! To make a difference from the usual family day we do where colleague and their family member were invited to watch movies and lunch together, together with the support from the Company we did something out from our comfort zone - Family Picnic Day also known as "Smiles and Sunshine!" The challenges is real: 1) It is a weekend and event begins early in the morning! 2) It is away from workplace, some minimal travel required! 3) Had to pray every single day that the event date itself it does not rain! (really, this is the most stressful part) 4) It is a first time, not sure how it will turned out. However, all the doubt were slowly casted away when respective event completed every weekend (in Kuantan, Penang and Klang Valley). Of course it cannot happened without great help and confident from the Daily Sparks team! Back track abit where first connected with Hui Nee Ho around Y2021 and did not know we will actually collaborate 3 years later. We can only express how amaze and satisfied we are with their services and attention to details. The team had a passion in creating a fun, inclusive environment which truly made this event a memorable experience for everyone! (it is not an easy task and of course the fight with mosquito early morning setting up in the park!) Side note, also with the amazing dessert from Inside Scoop team, our colleague and their family member enjoyed the event to their heart's content. The team passion in delivering the ice-cream with a smile definitely like an icing on the cake, marvelous! (Yes, its morning and trust me, having ice-cream does not require specific time aha!) All right, it became a lengthy post once again but grateful that another initiative accomplished. The support from the Company, the team member and the trust from them is beyond word can described. So, same question, what's next? #TeamAppreciation #FamilyPicnicDay #EventPlanning #hr #EmployeeEngagement

Team E: Winey Capuchin 🌍 Reflecting on an incredible semester in year 1 semester 2 working with my team on our MAB project where we played Moonsoonsim. We've tackled complex scenarios across markets, analyzing everything from external environments to human capital management, as we dove into the business of wine retail in the ASEAN region. Here are a few takeaways from our journey: 📈 Strategic Market Penetration: Expanding across key cities like Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, and Manila showed us the value of understanding diverse consumer behaviors and leveraging high-traffic areas to boost revenue. 📊 Data-Driven Decisions: From managing raw materials to forecasting retail demand, we optimized operational costs and fine-tuned inventory levels by digging deep into sales data—an essential strategy for staying competitive! 🌱 Sustainability in Action: Focusing on sustainable practices, we implemented measures to reduce waste and energy consumption. It’s crucial to integrate eco-friendly practices, even in small steps, as part of a responsible business strategy. 💡 Human Capital Focus: Investing in our employees with a tailored HR approach helped align talent with business goals and ultimately improved productivity—a reminder of the importance of a strong HR foundation. Thank you to my teammates Jana, Janelle, and Lewis for their dedication and insights, and to our mentors for guiding us through this immersive project! Excited to see how these skills translate into the real world. 🌟 #BusinessStrategy #Sustainability #TeamWork #GlobalMarkets #StudentProject #ASEANBusiness

As a PR, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing your hard work appreciated and executed flawlessly. I prepared a speech for YBM Gobind, Minister of Digital, this time it's for the DE Rantau Elevate 2024 event, and it was read word for word. Not forgetting the speech for our very own MDEC Chairman, YB Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh too. YBM announced major updates to the DE Rantau programme, further cementing Malaysia's position as a top destination for digital nomads. Here are the key highlights: 🌟 The DE Rantau Nomad Pass is now expanded to include a diverse range of professionals beyond the IT and digital sectors. Founders, CEOs, COOs, tax accountants, legal counsels, technical writers, business development managers, public relations professionals, and other related roles, whether they are digital freelancers or remote workers, can now apply. 🌟 The minimum income requirement for these non-IT/digital talents is set at USD60,000 per year or USD5,000 per month. 🌟 In a family-friendly move, parents of the main applicant can now be dependents. This initiative is a significant step towards making Malaysia a hub for global digital talent, fostering an inclusive and dynamic digital economy. Yeap, extracted these pointers from the speeches. Kudos to everyone involved in making DE Rantau Elevate 2024 a success! #DERantau #DigitalNomads #MDEC #MalaysiaDigital #RemoteWork #DigitalEconomy #PRLife #nationbuilding
