The best way to fit a bearing onto a shaft is to heat it up. This can be accomplished in many ways but, unfortunately, the most common practice is also the worst – an open flame or cutting torch. There is no way that heat can be applied uniformly, and this will always result in “hot spots.” The other problem is not knowing what the temperature is and this will lead to overheating the bearing, resulting in damage. The best and most effective way of heating a bearing is with a bearing heater. Using this method, you can control the temperature. SKF have a wide range of bearing heaters, starting with a hotplate, and leading up to large size bearing heaters. There are two portable heaters allowing you to heat up a bearing close to the mounting point. The bearing heaters can also be used to heat up gears and couplings to ensure quick and easy mounting results. How do you select the correct heater? SKF have a Bearing Heater Selection Tool that is easily accessible off the internet.
