"If India was a restaurant, Engineering and MPC would be the default items on the menu!🍛🥗" 'India is all about Engineering and MPC'...These words echoed in my mind for the past week or so, and honestly, I couldn't agree more. But even so, the scope of my passion (even though it's engineering with other things) is EXTREMELY limited.    So when the opportunity came by to present an analogy, while having a lot of creative liberty, I decided to bring one of my passions to life for the Young Leader Programme @ ADORE presenting my topic- "Versatile Biotechnology: The Future Aid of Gen-Z and How it’s overlooked in India" Researching this topic was super exciting and amusing and I couldn't thank ADORE and Simran Ma'am enough for coming up with this idea. Although I was stuck in an endless deliberation on whether to choose the topic of Biotech or the topic of Theatre and the Business of Acting, I'm glad I trod down this path as the research proved to be nothing but awesome. Diving into themes of neurology, gene therapy, and space exploration under Biotechnology itself proved to be fruitful and I'm more than happy on how my presentation came out for ADORE. Thanks to Avani Kulkarni along with the other ADORE Members for the smooth ride throughout. All of this to say, the scope of your passion is only decided by your actions, mind, and drive. No matter what society or statistics say about failure, success, and opportunities for your career, just know that those things aren't gonna tell your tale. You need to define your story and your career and create your own statistic. Will India ever be ATMANIRBHAR in analytical instrumentation? I sincerely wish so. But alas, I don't think so. In 1959, the Indian government set up CSIO in Chandigarh, with the sole purpose of indigenising analytical instruments. Six decades later, this establishment itself uses imported HPLC's, GC's and other instruments. Their website speaks for itself! In 1967, the government set up ECIL in Hyderabad. While it does make equipment for other sectors, ECIL miserably failed in analytical instrumentation, and shut down that division. A few Indian companies claim to "manufacture" analytical instruments. Their critical components, like UV lamps, detectors, monochromators, boards and the like, are all imported. From... where else ... China. For that matter, entire instruments are imported from China. Even the label on the instrument that says "Made in India" is made in China! In the pharma sector, India is among the top five countries in the world. But, 80% of India's API's and pharma essentials are imported, mainly from China. And, the analytical instruments that the pharma-biotech sector totally depends on, are all imported. Other crucial sectors, like food, chemicals, textiles, fertilisers and petrochem, are all dependent on imported analytical instruments. I am a huge supporter of ATMANIRBHAR BHART. But, in analytical instrumentation, our country is in a really bad situation. If we are to rise as a global power, then we must get off our gluteals. We must ourselves make the analytical instruments that we depend on. If we can send a rocket to Mars, why can't we make an HPLC? India is the first and only country in the world to land a rocket on the dark side of the Moon. Then why can't we make a simple UV spectrophotometer? Or even a decent pH meter?
