We think about those things so our customers don’t have to. This week, working as guests of Boots, we reviewed the full process of a product life from delivery to in-store shelf. Why? Because what happens in a supply chain can cause damage and compromise a brands presentation on shelf. Expensive claims can be made by retailers for baffling product packaging failures. Understanding is EVERYTHING! Together Boots were able to take learnings that will help them improve as a whole and we too took away knowledge that will help us to protect our customers packaging and brand and profit even more than before. I have found over my many years in retail as well as a former employee of Levi's that there is a distinct difference in the culture of retailers and suppliers. And we all know that "culture eats strategy for lunch. For an iconic brand like LS&Co. to once again try their hand at retail will be a massive undertaking and cannot be lead with proverbial "rose colored glasses". IMHO retailers can and do think vertically, however, this is not the same for many Manufacturers. Their organizations are just too hard wired in sourcing, quality suppliers and wholesale distribution. I wish LS&Co. tremendous success in this endeavor, however, if they do not flood their entire organization, with retail experts, and commit to serious change management at all execution layers they will struggle, once again, to reach the end consumer.

Productivity improvements are not long-term. And they shouldn't be relied on as such. In fact, while they may increase output and reduce costs, those benefits only go to the shareholders unless there is a strategy to put them to good use. Even then, they create no barrier to competition. The productivity improvements commissioned by the executive team at Rubbermaid did not coincide with the CEO's strategy. Wolfgang Schmitt wanted a new product from each division every day. Productivity improvements were to increase capacity and reduce costs. Operations and product development teams rarely met. After a number of successful improvement events, the 'bean counters' weren't seeing a whole lot of savings. That's when we started tying improvement efforts to the supply-chain and the Voice of the Customer critical to quality opportunities. We ended up chasing inventory out the door and producing what the customer wanted when they wanted it. Operations had to create their own strategy that had little to do with the corporate strategy. While productivity improvements helped increase the sales price to Newell, it was the product engineering team that created Little Tikes' uniqueness in the market. Schmitt tried to capitalize on product engineering with a wholesale approach. Operations tried a localized approach to steer the corporation. The failure of these efforts gave Rubbermaid no other option but to sell to Newell. Little Tikes is now in the hands of leadership who know the toy industry.
