As we observe Australian Rail Safety Week 2024, the message is clear: "Phone Down. Look Up." 📱🚫🚉 This year’s theme promoted by TrackSAFE Foundation highlights the importance of staying alert and avoiding distractions around railways. Whether you're walking, driving, or cycling near tracks, your attention can make all the difference in preventing accidents. Why Rail Safety matters? 👉Be Alert: 📣 Distractions can be deadly. Always stay aware of your surroundings near tracks and rail crossings. Looking at your phone, even for a moment, can lead to dangerous situations at rail crossings or on platforms. Staying focused saves lives. 👉 Obey Signals: 🚦 Respect all warning signs, signals, and barriers—never take risks at crossings. 👉Report Hazards: 🛑 Reporting hazards can save lives. If you see something unsafe, speak up. 👉 Spread Awareness: 📞 Educate your friends, family, and colleagues about railway safety. Together, we can reduce incidents and make our railways safer. This week works as a reminder for all of us—whether we're in the industry or the community—to prioritise safety around railways. Together, our collective activities during Rail Safety Week and beyond will help reach audiences far & wide, reminding our community to how to stay #railsafe. By staying alert and focused, we can help ensure everyone’s safety. #railsafety #phonedown #lookup #connectedteams #stayrailsafe Australasian Railway Association (ARA)

Maintaining commuter safety on our heavy rail, metro and light rail networks relies on pedestrians and passengers playing an active role to keep themselves and others safe. Rail Safety Week (5-11 August) is an annual awareness initiative in Australia and NZ designed to engage the community in safe rail practices. This year’s metro focused campaign reinforces safe behaviours including limiting distractions and standing behind the safety line on platforms. Your safety matters. It’s important to remember: • A moment of distraction can change your life forever. • Don’t run to get into a departing train or tram. • Remember to hold onto handrails. • Pause your tunes. Look and listen for trams and trains. • Phone down. Look up. Let’s stay rail safe. • Stay safe. Stand behind the line. ⚠️Warning: Grumpy train rant incoming⚠️ South West Rail has been announced as the first UK train operator to go back into public hands! This sounds like good news to me, the cost of a ticket and the level of service you actually get in recent years has been absurd. For what is considered sustainable travel, the network operators sure are the champions at making it as unappealing as possible. Trains running on time? Sorry we’ve had signalling issues ⏰ Working toilets? Maybe at the next station… but probably not 🚽 Space for my laptop? Yeah, on your lap 💻 Wi-fi? Kind of, but we will disconnect you at frequent intervals 🛜 Any seats left? Yes, but don't expect to sit next to anybody you are traveling with 💺 What about my security? We think you should look out for suspicious activity 👮🏼♂️ So how much for my trip? That will be £113.80 please 🫲🏼 I am jesting and do appreciate it's not that bad all the time but, my grumble on cost vs service still stands. What do you think of South West Rail going public? Can we expect a change in reliability, cost or service, or am I just being too optimistic? #trains #cost #service #rant #sustainability

📌 Enhanced Response Needed for Stranded Trains 🆘 The latest #report from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) 🇬🇧 highlights the urgent need for the rail industry to enhance response measures for stranded train incidents. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 💡 ↳ The report finds that while procedures exist, they are not always followed. Passengers reported a lack of familiarity among staff regarding these procedures. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 ⌛ ↳ Quick implementation of recovery plans is crucial, especially when a train loses power, to prevent passengers from being left without essentials like lighting or air conditioning. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 🚶♀️ ↳ There is a need for better support for passengers after evacuation, ensuring they can continue their journey safely and comfortably. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 📚 ↳ Enhanced training is necessary to ensure staff can prioritize passenger safety, welfare, and experience during stranded train scenarios. ↳ The appointment of a senior manager as a Stranded Train Champion is recommended. The implementation of these recommendations could significantly improve passenger experiences during train incidents. This week, we are pleased to join TrackSAFE Foundation in marking the 18th annual Rail Safety Week. Rail Safety Week’s key message – Expect the Unexpected. Watch out for Trains! - serves as a vital reminder to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings when around trains. Trains can come at any time of day or night (often when we least expect them) and cannot stop or swerve quickly. Collisions and near misses at railway crossings are ongoing issues that put lives at risk, disrupt rail services and have serious lasting impacts on train drivers, rail workers and the wider community. During our pre-start meetings this week, we will be discussing statistics around train safety and rail safe behaviours and reaffirming our commitment to maintaining stringent safety measures that protect everyone on or around track. Ensuring safety on the track is our priority, every day. #RailSafetyWeek #ExpectTheUnexpected #TrackSafe #StayRailSafe #StayAlertStayAlive #RailSafetyAwareness #TrainSafetyFirst #WatchListenLive

🚊 Rail Safety Week: Day of Transit Safety Today, we're calling on everyone to stay safe around railways by committing to the Transit Safety Pledge. Whether you're commuting or just near the tracks, safety should always come first! Take the pledge and remember these essential tips: ✅ Safety begins with me: I will always model safe behavior around tracks and trains. 🚆 Stay alert: Trains move quickly and quietly. I’ll keep my eyes up and wait behind the yellow line or raised markings. 🛑 Tracks are for trains only: I will never retrieve anything from the tracks and will notify transit personnel for help. 🚸 Cross safely: I will only cross at designated crossings, avoiding distractions. 🚲 Walk, don’t ride: I’ll walk my bike, scooter, or skateboard on station platforms to keep everyone safe. Let’s work together to prevent accidents. Pledge today for a safer tomorrow! 🙌 #RailSafetyWeek #TransitSafetyPledge #StopTrackTragedies #LookListenLive #JaguarTransportHoldings #ONETEAM
