Here’s why you should skip film school (Especially in 2024) In fact, a more traditional degree could give you a stronger foundation as a filmmaker (transferable skills, knowledge, experience) If you’re a director, know that future (narrative) directing work isn’t “guaranteed”. Once you graduate, you will likely end up working in different roles or industries (so invest that £ into directing films instead). Sure, film school is a great way to find collaborators, but this can also be achieved through: - Work experience - Joining a community / networking - Labs & workshops (or short courses) The best way to learn is by doing (and not a 3/4 year course). The best + fastest ways into filmmaking: 1. Become a runner, assistant or shoot BTS (standard approach) 2. Shadow people / get mentored (solid approach) 3. Shoot projects, screen it online/at festivals, share with industry folks (2 + 3 = best route for directors) Funnily enough, people tend to do this during or post film school anyway, so why not skip and get ahead? For other roles, film school still makes more sense. As a director, the only way to break into film film is by making a short, feature or pilot (that gets you noticed). No one in the narrative world cares about how good your commercial is. All you need to direct a killer film: ↳ Practice (+ strong work ethic & mindset) ↳ The right cast & crew ↳ Creativity (great script, direction, etc) ↳ Solid network (& support group) ↳ Some £ to invest All of which is possible without schooling.
