To design an execution engine, we need to think about 3 things: 1️⃣ Driving Execution; 2️⃣ Operator Parallelism; 3️⃣ Synchronizing Data Flow After deciding on the driving execution, we move on Operator Parallelism. When considering performance, we need to examine how operators can be parallelized, using either partition-driven or morsel-driven parallelism. In partition-driven parallelism, partitions are predefined in the execution plan, with a fixed number of partitions, and repartitioning requires an exchange operator. By contrast, morsel-driven parallelism allows for dynamic partitioning, where data is read incrementally, the number of morsels depends on the data size, and operators can control their own level of parallelism. In the final ~30 seconds, we discuss the trade-offs between partitions and morsels, focusing on load balancing and CPU utilization.
