🔒 Critical Infrastructure, Critical Risks 🔒 A recent study by SecurityScorecard and KPMG sheds light on a growing risk in the U.S. energy sector—third-party vulnerabilities. According to the report, 45% of cybersecurity breaches in U.S. energy organizations stem from third-party vendors, nearly double the global rate of 29%. Even more striking, 90% of energy companies that faced multiple breaches had security issues linked to their vendors. This study is a powerful reminder that the energy sector, often not viewed as a prime target, has become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. This lack of perception may have contributed to the current surge in incidents. To safeguard the infrastructure that powers our nation, it's critical to establish mandatory security standards for vendors working within this space, as the article strongly emphasizes. Additionally, the findings underscore the need for a collective defense strategy across the industry. By fostering a unified approach to cybersecurity, energy companies and their partners can better protect our resources from the growing threat landscape. At Symposit, we’re committed to partnering with organizations to identify and mitigate third-party risks, helping secure the systems that underpin our nation’s most essential services. A report on #cybersecurity attacks against U.S. utilities shows an increase of 70% over last year. China, Russia and cybercriminal organizations have targeted energy and power utilities in the U.S. and potentially prepositioned advanced persistent threats on key operating systems. With power demand surging, utilities have moved quickly to meet the need, but cyber defenses have not kept pace. Another reminder that much work still needs to be done in partnership with industry to shore up this essential, critical #infrastructure sector. See the #reuters article.

A new joint study by SecurityScorecard and KPMG reveals that third-party vendors are the top cybersecurity threat to U.S. energy companies. Key findings: • 45% of security breaches in the U.S. energy sector were caused by third-party vendors. • 90% of companies with multiple breaches were vulnerable due to third-party risks. • 67% of third-party-related breaches involved external software and IT providers. The energy sector scored only a "B" on cybersecurity, with 19% of companies posing significant risk to the entire supply chain. Industry experts call for: • Collective defense approach • Operationalization of threat intelligence • More agile software update processes As Willy Leichter, CMO at AppSoc, states: "The industry must find more agile ways to decouple software updates from operational infrastructure." Let's discuss: How can energy companies better protect themselves and our critical infrastructure from these evolving cyber threats? #Cybersecurity #EnergySector #SupplyChainRisk #TechTrends

The 7th edition of Cyber Europe, one of the largest cybersecurity exercises in Europe, organised by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) challenged the resilience of the EU energy sector. Cybersecurity has become a growing threat gateway for the EU critical infrastructure sectors, as the number of cyberattacks has largely increased in recent years. In 2023 alone, over 200 reported cyber incidents targeted the energy sector and more than half of them were directed specifically at Europe. The significant role the sector holds for the European economy renders the energy industry particularly susceptible to cyber threats and attacks. #CyberEurope #EnergySectorSecurity #EUPreparedness #CyberResilience #EnergyCyberSecurity #PelionCyberSecurity #CyberDefenseEU
