Post 108: Media Blitz
#Election lures everyone in #India. Nobody is left untouched as we all get pulled into it willy-nilly. However, no one else gets as deeply involved in elections as journalists aside from the politicians, of course. Journalists remain at the forefront of every election. They travel across the length and breadth of the country rigorously covering every aspect of the election. They bring to us news, trends, opinion polls, and exit polls, and as if that’s not enough, they also do poll of polls. Journalists have their ears to the ground when it comes to gauging the mood of the voters. #Politicians and psephologists cannot match the one-on-one connect that journalists have with voters.
The 2024 general election for the 18th Lok Sabha is no different. There is in-depth coverage of this election by every #media outlet worth its salt. Each one of them claims to be the number 1 when it comes to election coverage. However, the competition is stiff in the game of TRP. They are trying to outdo each other with a more rigorous coverage and innovative approach.
If you tune in to any news channel these days, there is nothing else but election. Media outlets have come up with catchy names for their election coverage—Election Express, Chaupal, Bike Reporters, Election on your platter, etc. The #journalists, the foot soldiers of these #media outlets, are working on the ground 24X7 to bring these programs to viewers.
One senior journalist is hopping from place to place discussing popular regional cuisines while covering elections. Mixing food with politics—an interesting concept. Another journalist is traveling on a train from Delhi to Kerala, talking to passengers to gauge the voters’ mood of the nation on elections. Some journalists are riding bikes to cover elections. They thrust mics on your face to get your opinion.
Journalists are not missing out on any opportunity to speak to political leaders on the election trail. They travel with A-lister politicians in their cars to do quick interviews to get their views or get some sound bites. They precariously hang on to the electioneering van to interview politicians during roadshows. Politicians are more than willing to oblige because it gives them wider coverage and better reach. They give interviews while at the same time engaging with their #voters—a classic case of killing two birds with one stone.
Media coverage of elections is getting bigger and better with every passing election. Media houses are pulling out all the stops to cover the elections. They stop at nothing to get their share of poll spending by the political parties. It is estimated that the media campaigns of political parties across various platforms will be around 30% of the total poll expenditures which is expected to touch Rs. 1.35 trillion during this election. Media outlets are out there to make a killing.
