I recently had the privilege of reading "The Right Call" by Sally Jenkins, and it offered valuable insights from the world of sports that can be applied to various aspects of life. Here are some key takeaways from the book that I found particularly helpful: Conditioning: Just as physical conditioning impacts brain performance, the reverse is also true. Mental fatigue can affect muscular endurance. For instance, Italian soccer players who did brain teasers before practice made more errors in controlling and passing the ball. Practice: Consistent practice is essential for excellence. Top performers dedicate themselves to deliberate practice, refining their skills over time. Discipline: Greatness requires discipline. Whether it’s adhering to a training regimen or maintaining focus during high-pressure situations, discipline is crucial. Candor: Effective communication is vital. Constructive feedback and open dialogue help build trust and improve performance. Culture: The environment and values within a team or organization significantly impact success. A positive and supportive culture fosters growth. Resilience: Overcoming setbacks and adversity is part of the journey. Resilience allows athletes and leaders to bounce back stronger. Intention: Purposeful actions lead to desired outcomes. Relaxing over the weekend is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. But remember, relaxation looks different for everyone. I have just finished watching the incredible biopic "Steve Jobs". It's more than just a biographical film; it's a masterclass in innovation, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of perfection. I witnessed Jobs transform from a brash and idealistic young entrepreneur to a seasoned executive. Two key takeaways for me are 'Power of Storytelling' & 'Challange the Status Quo'. Jobs was a master storyteller, data analysts can benefit from learning how to communicate complex ideas effectively and make their findings accessible to a wider audience. Like Job, we can find inspiration in his willingness to take risks and pursue innovative solutions. The picture is collected. But an interesting question for analysts, can anyone tell which chart it is ????????

I recently took on a new job as an analytics team lead overseeing 12-13 people at a public-listed corporation. It is a challenging and high-profile role within the organization, and I feel that I have significant room for improvement in terms of leadership. I figured that I'd benefit from someone who's "been there, done that". Someone who can be an unbiased sounding board when I describe the challenges I face at work. Someone who can offer genuine, no-holds-barred advice on how to run a successful analytics team, execute major tech transformation projects, and deliver real business impact. ** The ideal person I have in mind: Someone aged roughly 40-45, with significant experience in data & analytics. Say, a Director of Analytics or Head of Data at a big tech or high-profile / blue chip corporation, overseeing a department of 50 or more people. Someone who's willing to spend approx. 30-60 minutes every 1 or 2 months on a call with me during after work hours (1800-2300 SGT) or on the weekends. ** I am also looking for someone who's willing to do this on a pro bono basis. I know this is a lot to ask for, but I prefer mentorships with no monetary motivations involved. I have spent a great amount of my own time helping others on a pro bono basis (e.g. connecting people to job opportunities, helping people get into the tech / analytics industry). First time data leader? Here’s what I would do on day 30-60. Once you’ve laid the groundwork, it’s all about showing progress. At this stage, look for quick wins to build credibility and build relationships in every direction. Here’s what I’d focus on from Day 31 to Day 60: 🚀 1. Deliver Some Quick Wins Now that I’ve got my bearings, I’d identify a couple of quick wins that could make an immediate impact. Whether that’s fixing a broken dashboard or optimizing a data pipeline, the goal here is to show progress early and build some credibility. 📊 2. Standardize Key Metrics This is a big one. Misaligned metrics are often a major pain point. By getting everyone on the same page with consistent KPIs and definitions, we can avoid a lot of confusion down the road. 🔗 3. Focus on Cross-Functional Relationships At this point, I’d start leaning in closely with other departments—engineering, product, finance—to ensure that the data team’s work aligns with the rest of the organization. Data doesn’t live in a bubble. 💻 4. Develop the Team It’s easy to get caught up in tools and systems, but the real magic happens when you invest in your people. I’d look at opportunities for up skilling and mentoring, before you start shaking up the org chart.

Key concepts that guide my analysis. The football world is a professional one, be it writing/editing/scouting or coaching etc Thus having module that expands beyond casual interpretations is key, so here are mine. First off, there isn't any discipline void of communication, wherein the language is relative to that discipline, football is no different, and as such it is important to become acclimatised with them. These terms must me descriptive enough to your type of audience, scouts and coaches for example are more savvy with technical terminology, whist a casual audience require more subtlety. Example, diagonal runs off the ball/on the ball, counterpressing, transitions, vertical combination play, third man runs, lateral defending, or terms that will have a varied level of understanding depending on the audience. Then methodology, and although it varies from scouts/writers and so on, the final point is almost the same. For team or player analysis, I look for patterns, "style of play" is in my opinion dictated by inclination(what a player or team will do over again in a given situation), whether that's trained or intrinsic. These patterns inform my judgement. For teams, I look for patterns in these phases: • build-up • attacking/defensive transition • attack/defence And although these phases are simplified, as there are varying game states within these structures, a repetition of actions within these frameworks in form me of what I team is trying to do, on and off the ball. The methodology in my player analysis albeit similar has its peculiarities. For instance the physical and mental profiles are just as important as a "style of play" And unlike casual analysis, professional profiling is more holistic, not just what a player does or doesn't but why and how, stats can be misleading without context, that's why profiling will always be necessary to scouting in the sport. Why patterns? Football is dynamic, teams and players can't always have singular reactions or actions, and consequently the value of analysis in this regard lies in what players will do more times than not, giving better detail and depth to analysis. And finally, data analysis, an important part of just about any major sport and thus a major premise for decision making in football too, particularly over the past decade. Stats are important, but interpreting those numbers, the metrics that inform them and how they work, a field that personally still getting around.
