A recent study led by Professor Anna Ziersch from Flinders University followed 25 refugees and asylum seekers for three years. The study revealed that unstable housing significantly affects refugees' and asylum seekers' physical and mental health. Challenges such as language barriers, lack of rental references, discrimination, and difficulties in establishing social connections make it even more difficult for refugees and asylum seekers to secure stable housing, especially in the context of the broader housing crisis. These findings align with the discussions we've had in the SETSCoP (Settlement Engagement and Transition Support Community of Practice) with settlement service providers who work to assist refugees and asylum seekers in finding suitable housing. The researchers recommend comprehensive support strategies, such as longer periods of supported housing and initiatives to help build connections within neighbourhoods. 🔊 Listen to the podcast on Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia: https://lnkd.in/eWxfHCBr #Housing #HousingCrisis #Refugees #AsylumSeekers #Discrimination #SocialConnections #Community #SettlementProviders

My motto is “to be curious not judgemental” (Whitman & Lasso 🙂), which I try to practise on a daily basis. I feel this is more important than ever, especially in a world where we are increasingly pushed into echo chambers by mainstream and social media. Sometimes it is hard to see beyond on the noise when it involves the sensitive issue of immigration, particularly when the media focuses on the negative and provocative parts of this multifaceted challenge. This week I had the unique opportunity, as part of my work with Mental Health UK, to meet and work with unaccompanied young refugees, who had fled persecution, war and discrimination for a chance of a better life in the UK. They were respectful, pleasant and interactive, as we explored the concept of #resilience and how to build it. To be honest, I felt humbled, as these young people had already shown incredible resilience in reaching our country. Schools in #refugee settings often are overcrowded and have limited resources, contributing to elevated levels of teacher stress & likelihood of violence. Can training on social emotional skills development and positive discipline and classroom strategies help? In Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in #Tanzania, a violence prevention program for teachers, revealed that they were slightly more likely to use positive discipline & self-regulation techniques, and to develop negative attitudes towards physical violence Read more about this impact evaluation conducted by IPA Tanzania in collaboration with International Rescue Committee: bit.ly/vactz #IPATanzania #MoreEvidenceLessPoverty #ViolencePrevention

We need to thoughtfully examine how terms like "culture" and "community" are often used superficially, without truly understanding the profound experiences they encompass. As someone who has witnessed the impact of trauma on individuals and communities, I strongly believe in recognising lived experience as expertise. Our current frameworks often prioritise economic considerations over authentic human needs, missing the full range of human experiences—the good, the bad, the ugly... the transformative potential of 'vulnerability' that exists in us all. Initiatives like those from the Social Policy Group are crucial in making these concepts real and authentic. They prioritise the real, lived experiences of individuals, providing culturally sensitive and accessible support. Embracing authenticity means facing these truths, however challenging. I deeply respect those who seek help and express their pain, facilitating healing. It's time for honest conversations about difficult topics, moving beyond superficial discussions to foster genuine growth and learning. We need to honor and value the real experiences of individuals to create a truly inclusive and supportive community. In a world where social roles are often commodified by modern economics, this work has become competitive in a capitalist society—opposed to the true nature of community and cultural work. This is the mountain I will fight on and likely die on. Lived experience must be centered in all systems and policy reform. All program design and social service responses must consult the people they are designed for; otherwise, they will likely miss the mark and consume resources in ways that have little (or no) impact. The assumption that one can fully understand from a concept or knowledge base gained through study rather than lived experience is short-sighted. Let's push for true systems change by encouraging people to share their stories and get involved in forming solutions. #codesign #participation #participatoryresearch #community #culture #development #traumainformed #livedexperience #expertise #systemschange #regeneration
