Land use and climate change threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) more than ever before, making the need for protection and restoration increasingly urgent. The 2050 Vision for Biodiversity outlines an ambitious path to safeguard these vital systems. Oliver Schelske, Swiss Re Nature R&D Lead, shared insights into this topic with the World Economic Forum. National ecosystem assessments can shape climate change policies and plans by providing up-to-date, credible information on biodiversity and ecosystem services while highlighting opportunities for synergies between climate change and biodiversity agendas. But when it comes to reflecting climate change in a national ecosystem assessment, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach. The NEA Initiative at UNEP-WCMC outlines key entry points for integrating climate change considerations into these assessments, helping policymakers create cohesive climate and biodiversity policies. Tropical forests are vital to global biodiversity, carbon storage, and climate stability, yet they are disappearing at alarming rates. While global efforts aim to eliminate deforestation by 2030, almost all tropical regions missed their 2023 interim targets, putting the planet’s ecological balance and climate goals at greater risk.
