Yesterday we sent two of our best people along to the Essex Business Awards, where Lewis Hodgetts scooped the coveted Apprentice of the Year Award. Cheering him on was our Commercial Director, Martin Hembling, who was also shortlisted for an award. Feeling very proud of both of them! GreenSquareAccord has announced receiving 254 nominations for their Gold Star Awards, describing this as an impressive 42% increase over last year’s entries. However, this claim seems somewhat underwhelming, especially considering their workforce size and the upcoming expenditure for the awards ceremony.
To put this in perspective, with an employee base ranging between 1,000 and 5,000, the 254 nominations represent only about 5.08% to 25.4% of their total staff. Last year’s nominations, calculated to be around 179, indicate a low participation rate.
Moreover, it is important to note that these nominations are solely from staff members, with no input from customers or residents. This exclusion is disheartening, particularly considering the crucial role that customers and residents play in the organisation’s operations. Their feedback and recognition would provide a more comprehensive and authentic measure of performance and service quality.
When considering the costs associated with organising and hosting an awards ceremony, including logistics, venue, awards, and lost productivity, one must question the efficiency and impact of this exercise. The expenditure seems extravagant and not necessarily reflective of broad recognition across the organisation.
Given these figures and the lack of customer/resident involvement, it's crucial to consider whether the awards genuinely enhance morale and recognition or if they simply serve as a costly tradition with limited reach. In light of these numbers, the resources allocated to the Gold Star Awards might be better invested in more impactful employee and customer engagement initiatives, or better yet spent making the homes of their residents safe, warm and dry.
We’ve received 254 nominations for our Gold Star Awards, an impressive 42% increase on last year.
Our awards are an important opportunity for us to recognise and reward the colleagues and teams who go above and beyond and enable us provide a great service to our customers.
Our final ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3 July 2024. We can’t wait to crown our winners, good luck everyone!
Celebrating My Award with a Blurry Twist!
I recently had the incredible honor of receiving an award that recognizes my efforts and dedication in the real estate industry! 🎉 But here's the catch: the photo from that special moment turned out... well, a bit blurry! 😂
While it might not be Social Media-worthy, this little mishap perfectly captures the essence of my journey. Just like that photo, our paths are often filled with ups and downs, with some moments coming into focus while others remain a bit fuzzy.
What I realized is that the award symbolizes not just the achievement but also the hard work, sleepless nights, and the support of amazing mentors and colleagues who have guided me along the way. 🌟
In a world obsessed with perfection, let’s celebrate the imperfect moments, too! They remind us that growth isn’t always about crystal-clear clarity; sometimes, it’s about embracing the blur and finding beauty in the chaos.
Here’s to the journey—the highs, the lows, and even the blurry snapshots! 📸 Keep pushing forward, stay humble, and remember: it’s not just about the destination, but the adventures we have along the way.
Cheers to more exciting (and hopefully clearer) moments ahead! 🚀

ROBYNS AWARD ENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED
The deadline for entries for the seventh year of the awards aimed at showcasing young talent in the foodservice sector has been extended to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, to give those finishing their entries a little more time.
We know how time-consuming writing these award entries is. For those rising stars out there, this will boost their morale and motivation by recognising their hard work. It shows your commitment to developing young talent and enhancing your company's reputation and attractiveness to potential hires. This recognition also provides valuable networking opportunities and helps in their professional growth. Overall, it's a beneficial move for both the employee and the organisation. #ACERobyns24

Yesterday marked a pivotal moment in my journey to becoming an accredited Executive Coach through Meyler Campbell‘s Mastered Programme as we entered the second half of our program. It’s amazing how much the depth of our discussions has changed, allowing us to delve deeper into our learning experiences. I can scarcely believe that next year we too will be graduating as the 2024 cohort did last night.
What I am particularly enjoying about coaching is the focus on supporting others in finding their own paths to success. It’s not about giving advice or sharing knowledge; it’s about providing leaders with a structured way of thinking that can help break down problems and accelerate development.
That said, much of what I am learning relates to my personal journey towards becoming the leader that I aspire to be. I am convinced that in a world of rapid and disruptive change, a manager’s role can no longer be to direct and decide alone—we cannot have all the right answers. Leaders will succeed by drawing out the best in their teams, who will, in turn, learn to adapt and generate fresh, innovative ideas more quickly.
So, a few observations from my journey so far:
- Listening is the ultimate superpower 🦸. It allows others to feel fully seen and heard while also providing us with valuable insights. It’s also incredibly difficult.
- Words, 📖 even chosen in haste, often uncover underlying truths. Clarifying and exploring these phrases can help us find new paths forward.
- Learning is a lifelong journey. Changing behavior is challenging, but even small steps can lead to a more significant transformation.
I’m grateful to my wonderful group (my fellow Vikings) for their support and shared wisdom on this adventure: Mark Carnegie-Brown, Tim Wakefield, Dominic Ely, Eva Sarma, Sophie Kent and our leaders Keith Krasny and Catherine Devitt

Last night at Merchant Taylors' Company in London, we were joined by graduates of both the Meyler Campbell Mastered and Unlimited programme to congratulate them on their success and completion of the programme(s). They were surrounded by their family and friends, as well as fellow Meyler Campbell Alumni from previous years, and the Meyler Campbell Faculty team and management team.
And a big thank you to our guest speaker David Morley who closed our Graduation ceremony so wonderfully.
Once again, congratulations to all.

🏅 What’s the Real Value of an Award?
Two days ago, I asked a question: do awards really matter? Are they trophies of our success or just reminders of a moment that’s passed? 🎖️
Reflecting on that, awards are more than just shiny objects on a shelf. From childhood swimming badges to business accolades, they shape us in ways we often overlook. The question isn’t whether awards have value—it's what kind of value they hold for you.
🏆 Meaningful or Marketing? In business, some awards represent hard-earned credibility. Others, let’s face it, might just be part of the marketing spin. But there are those rare, deeply meaningful honours—the ones like the Victoria Cross—that stand for bravery, dedication, and going beyond the call of duty. These are more than just symbols; they’re powerful reminders of human courage and commitment.
🏅 So, What’s Your Most Meaningful Award? Whether it's a childhood badge, a business trophy, or a personal achievement no one else knows about, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What has truly shaped your journey?
