Re-posting one of my less popular / unorthodox views. Weekly 1:1s are hacks to get around the lack of proper team communication setups, and they weaken individual resilience. Adhoc 1:1s are fine for providing spot feedback, but they should be rare. Career growth 1:1s are great, but they should happen once in 3-6 months. Project check-ins / questions should be discussed in 5-10 minutes on slack. A design whiteboarding meeting between two engineers is fantastic, but it's not a 1:1. Weekly 30 minute 1:1s are unhealthy and an unnecessary time-sink, stop using them to communicate with your reports. https://lnkd.in/ehr_e2Xv

There's a human aspect of work that this view misses. Regular 1:1s (not necessarily weekly) help connect the two individuals in a way that transactional 1:1s (like the ad-hoc ones you described) cannot. If building connection is not a priority or need, then I agree they may be wasteful. PS: I love unpopular opinions that help question standard practice. Please don't stop :)

You make some great points here, and I don't disagree with them as a general framework. I'm curious about your statement that they weaken individual resilience, though. Can you expound on that?

There shouldn't be any template for this. It depends on the individual and the manager. For the people, I manage, some people do really like if I connect once in two weeks. And some doesn't care for a quarter.

I like impromptu 1:1 when Swapnil just swings by my desk and chat
