What can The Apprentice teach us about recruitment? Last night Sir Alan Sugar crowned his new apprentice, but it isn’t simply great TV entertainment. The successes and failures of the would-be apprentices are compulsive viewing, but there is a serious side to the programme which teaches us several lessons about how to succeed in recruitment and the world of work. “We need to be addressing this human capital constraint with urgency – with policies to incentivise careers in trades, to incentivise businesses to take on apprenticeships, awareness to promote trades careers to women, incentives to rethink how we get more people into VET Teaching careers.” Earlier today, our Founder and CEO, Katherine McConnell, took part in the ‘Mission Critical - Climate Industry Policy for a Net-Zero Australia’ event hosted by the Electrical Trade Union of Australia. Sharan Burrow chaired the panel discussion with the impressive Prof. Mariana Mazzucato, ACTU President Michelle O’Neil and Katherine. At Brighte, we believe private/public partnerships are an effective way to deliver large-scale schemes. Delivery of large-scale schemes relies on electrical workers installing upgrades in every home, and for this reason, we need to attach workplace outcomes to each project to ensure we have the workforce to deliver at scale.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 223 (IBEW 223)’s apprentice night was packed, containing all the hallmarks of an inviting neighborhood event: groups of young men and women envisioning an opportunity of prosperity, of building a happy future for their family. Apprentices beaming with pride as they show their classroom equipment to attendees. Retirees visiting old friends. Banquet tables with finger sandwiches and cookie plates. But most importantly, a crowd as diverse as it’s local community- neighbors with all different beliefs and backgrounds congregating, uniting, around a shared vision of hope. Strengthening our local unions does more than increase access to high-quality jobs, it provides community. It’s something money can’t buy, and it’s something we all could probably use a bit more of right now. We can support our unions by using local chapters for work on local projects. A booming clean energy sector provides the opportunities for doing so. Tonight’s crowd makes it abundantly clear- we want this.

The Apprentice is back next Thursday 1st February on BBC1. It’s a show I enjoy because it highlights the madness and poor decisions we as business people can make when under pressure (no matter how academically bright we are). Common sense is not learned either, I believe it’s a gift that is developed over time the more and more we use it! At the same time when under pressure we can become genius and deliver the most amazing results. (If we are working with the right team). Nevertheless it got me thinking about my own Apprentice. Their journey and my responsibility to nurture, teach and encourage them in their chosen industry sector - Property. It’s a tough job and one that requires, time, patience and energy but rewarding when tasks are done well and you can see the learning that transpired from it. When I asked my Apprentice what she thought of the journey she said: "Being an apprentice not only fills me with excitement for my future, progress and growth in the field. It also pushes me to overcome challenges and build resilience." Tamia Shaw I’ll definitely encourage her to watch the show! Shout out to two of my favourite Apprentices Tim Campbell and Marketing Michaela Wain How do you get the most out of your Apprentice? #apprentices #thenextgeneration #propertymentor
