Hoteliers, it is important to continue the global efforts of adding more sustainability into the footprint and operations of every hotel. According to the International Energy Agency, a reduction of 70 million carbon tons a year is needed by 2030 to meet global climate goals.
In the most recent national data, America generated 262.4 million tons of waste, up 4.5 %. That amounts to nearly 5 lbs. per person a day. The greatest cost is environmental. When organic waste sits in a landfill, it decomposes, emitting methane, which is bad for the climate. Landfills are the 3rd largest source of methane emissions in the country.
Hoteliers can collectively do their part by reducing the CO2 footprint at their hotels. As an example, Hilton has reduced waste by 32%, carbon emissions by 31% and water and energy use by 22%. In addition, they have committed to sending zero soap to landfills, banning plastic straws, and removing plastic water bottles from meetings and events.
Sustainability is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

1wI enjoyed this chat as Natalie was so honest about how things are – something she is also hopeful of others, across hotels and sustainability, being more open about next year.
