In my view Contract Management is experiencing a reset, both in execution and perception. No longer an admin function just exercising commercial terms but so much more. It's an increasingly key component in driving growth in client and supplier relationships. But terms of contracts alone cannot satisfy evolving needs. That success is dependent on aligning Contract Managers who, to deal with today's executive priorities, have the skillset and mindset to aid design and delivery of strategic goals. So obvious yet so frustrating. This article was in the Sunday papers yesterday. Some 65% of managers and leaders in roles today, according to the journalist and her research, have had no guidance or support or professional development/training before they took up their role. None. The Chartered Management Institute reckon this figure could be closer to 80%. The managers and leaders in almost every business today are typically expected to drive results, foster a culture, manage change, lead and manage people, cope with hybrid and DNI expectations, own issues and resolve them and the list goes on and is long. Thankfully there are organisations and businesses who are trying to support these critical business enablers (i.e. their managers and leaders) with development and training to support their progress and capability and equip them to succeed....but about 60-70% of organisations are not. Look at your employee attrition and turnover. Look at the succession and future talent of your business. Look at the culture and engagement scores you have. Look at performance and results. There are so many critical business dependencies (today and future) that are predicated on a skilled and equipped level of management and leadership competence. One to reflect upon. Are you setting up to fail or not? Keep winning!
