Yesterday afternoon, we hosted our Annual Lecture where Professor Harriet Bulkeley presented her research on governing with nature and nature-based solutions for cities 🌿 Harriet introduced the Urban Nature Atlas, a database of 1000 nature-based solutions from a variety of cities across the world. You can find the resource here https://una.city 🌍 Harriet researches infrastructuring nature to find more resilient solutions, to work towards justice and to look at how nature could become infrastructural to govern with it. Working with the Dutch government, Harriet aims to bring about legislative change. Questions from our 3 panel members discussed if experimentation can lead to the emergence of further changes and whether we should look at transformative change instead. This could be co-benefits such as learning what needs to be done in a cultural way to create good societies which are culturally and economically strong. Thank you to all who attended and engaged, to Mat and our panel, and particular thank you to Harriet for a brilliant presentation. We will share the video recording of the lecture in due course 🎬

🤩We are happy to share co-founder, Charlotte Hankin’s, recent co-authored publication in the Australian Journal of Environmental Education: ‘Mess-making as a Force for Resistance: Reimagining Environmental Educational Research for Multispecies Flourishing’ 👀In this article, Charlotte employs ‘mess-making’ as a research and pedagogical approach that - 1) resists the civilising, domesticating, controlling ways that children and young people experience education across the world today; 2) resists the anthropocentrism that is imbued in our communities, systems, organisations that contribute to ecosystemic ill-health. 🐝You can read about how arts-based approaches support the kinds of messy learning that our world/s desperately need to address issues involving planetary health - this applies to the ways that adults learn, as well as children and young people! 🎁Unfolding Aliveness is an educational-ecological-artistic-space, studio, and practice which attends to, and creates with, multispecies world/s. 🦅We… Write Research Speak Consult Create Collaborate Care ✅Follow our page 🔥Take a course and join us to create messy Sound Stories for Multispecies Justice https://lnkd.in/gieC9yGK 🗓️We have 2 new cohorts starting on October 15th. On August 18, 2024, the #NatureRestorationLaw came into effect and with it, much needed hope for European communities. The European Nature Restoration Law, as part of the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, includes developing National Restoration Plans in EU Member States. However, to implement these plans on a national-scale, there is a need for a more thorough integration of ecological restoration methods in school curricula and training courses in order to provide students and professionals with the green skills necessary to transition to a sustainable and more-climate resilient society. For this reason, the European Commission has been encouraging and supporting Member States to modernize Vocational Education and Training (VET) and continuing education programs. The TEAM#UP project, a partnership of 15 institutions from five European countries, is a great example of this process. ТЕАМ#UP is an #Erasmus+ funded project that aims to provide educational material on #ecologicalrestoration, working with pilot VET schools across Czech Republic, Germany, Norway and Spain. TEAM#UP’s vision is to create and share knowledge, tools, training, and resources used to practice ecological restoration and make these available on an open educational resource platform. Working with diverse partners from VET, universities, and the private sector, TEAM#UP aids in facilitating the skills development and training necessary for upscaling ecological restoration practices across Europe. #teamup2restore

🤝 Co-creation and citizen science takes on an exciting role at the Secondary School Gröpelingen (Neue Oberschule Gröpelingen, NOG), where they have developed a framework to educate pupils on climate change and biodiversity loss to empower students to take action towards a better future. Combining the Biodiverse Cities local planning and the joint biodiverse nature-based solutions (Bio-NBS) development with NOG’s curriculum on “Climate – I Am Changing”, the framework follows three phases: BioBlitz (citizen science approach), Dialogue Mapping (co-creation approach) and DIY Mobile Green Events (spatial experimentation) 🍃 Find out more about this inspiring collaboration with an article by Marius Wittmann from the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Science of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (SUKW) 👇 Växjö kommun Ville de Lille Bergen kommune BrestLife Aeres University of Applied Science Almere Aarhus University University of Bremen IUCN Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij Open Kaart | co-creatie van de leefomgeving Het Vogelnest #NatureBasedSolutions #UrbanResilience #Sustainability #Biodiversity #Coexistence #GreenCities #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateChangeMitigation

🌍🎉 NBS EduWORLD is thrilled to celebrate the adoption of the pioneering EU #RestorationLaw! This groundbreaking regulation sets legally binding targets to restore 20% of the EU’s degraded land and sea ecosystems by 2030 and all ecosystems by 2050. To achieve these ambitious goals, EU countries must restore at least 30% of habitats covered by the law—such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and lakes—from poor to good condition by 2030, and reach 90% by 2050. Additionally, it is essential to ensure that these restored areas do not deteriorate over time. 🌱🌊 This historic commitment has the potential to significantly enhance #NatureBasedSolutions education by: - Providing a robust legal framework and policy support for NBS integration. - Increasing funding and resources for research, training, and practical applications. - Elevating public awareness and importance of ecosystem restoration. - Driving research and innovation in NBS practices. - Developing critical skills for the future workforce. - Offering valuable real-world case studies for learning and evaluation. - Encouraging community engagement and citizen science initiatives. Together, let’s harness this momentum to restore and protect our ecosystems for a sustainable and resilient future! 🌳📚 #EUGreenDeal #NBSeducation #EcosystemRestoration #TeachFromNature

Cottonopolis: Lessons for environmental science through the lens of Manchester This AHRC/NERC-funded project explores the archives of ‘cotton’ to unsettle the celebration of Manchester’s history as a city of science and innovation The project also challenges us to rethink the history of environmental knowledge production at The University of Manchester and our role in Manchester’s colonial legacy, revealing our complicity in global socio-environmental legacies. Within its much celebrated ‘innovative past’ Manchester – and its industries, private businesses, universities, and cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, art galleries, and observatories – were key hubs in the expansion of the UK’s colonial aspirations. This project interrogates Manchester’s role as the first industrialising city, and the dominance of the expansion of global cotton markets through environmental science, which ultimately provided the cultural and scientific authority that underpinned colonial expansion, frontier agriculture, and colonial urbanization. In this project ‘cotton’ is a starting point from which to unsettle the celebration of Manchester’s history as a city of science and innovation, challenging us to rethink the history of the first industrial city as a global socio-environmental history with a problematic legacy for the environmental sciences. Through the histories of cotton, we reveal the socio-environmental legacies of industrial Manchester and the environmental knowledge and impacts this legacy created. #qbsmscbloggers

How can we instill a sense of environmental stewardship in our children for a better future for them, just as our ancestors did? This question kept arising in my mind as I have been reading Ikechukwu Anthony Kanu, OSA, PhD work on African Indigenous Ecological Knowledge Systems illuminating the profound connection between our cultural heritage and the environment. As Dr. Kanu explains, “The preservation of sacred animals and the taboos surrounding them were ecological guardians, playing major roles in the conservation of biodiversity.” In our current way of life, I can't help but think of children having a reverence for nature and a sense of responsibility for nature through their schools. Their educational curriculum integrating stories of nature that weave traditional tales and narratives that emphasize the importance of protecting nature and its creatures. Children having outdoor learning sessions and experiences where they can connect with nature helping them understand the beauty and fragility of the world around them Use of art, music, and drama to explore themes of nature and animal protection forging a personal connection with environmental issues that can inspire lifelong stewardship. Engaging local communities in conservation efforts and storytelling sessions. When children witness their parents and elders valuing nature, they are more likely to adopt those values as their own. By embracing these educational changes, we can nurture a generation that understands the sacred relationship between humans and the natural world. Let’s delve into the wisdom of our ancestors and embrace the teachings of great minds like Dr. Kanu as we strive for a greener future! His work offers invaluable insights into how we can apply indigenous knowledge today to protect our environment. What are your thoughts on integrating indigenous knowledge into modern education?
