I promised to share more clips from Indy Johar speaking at the UK Community Foundations conference in Harrogate this week but LinkedIn wouldn't let me add clips to the earlier post so I've complied some key bits in the montage below. Covers: ⚡ Valuing #risk ⚡ Creating #resilience ⚡ Need for #action now ⚡ Extraction of value vs the creation of #value ⚡ Need to #invest in structural common goods again Important messages for #Funders #Investors #Communities. #GreatRiskTransfer Brings home for anyone that "doesn't believe in #ClimateChange", it doesn't matter whether of not you believe, the impacts of passing +1.5°C are here - and we must act now to increase resilience to help communities cope. cc Foundation Scotland, Giles Ruck, Carolyn Sawers, Nick Addington, Jim McCormick, Mamta Patel (She/ her), Leslie Rance, Kim Atkinson, Mairi Mickel, Carlos Miranda It made me think of Rob Murray - MIOL and your emergency work after floods in communities in Scotland. Well insulated village halls with independent energy supply through renewables are critical for rural resilience in times of crisis. cc Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust, Charlie Cumming, Keith Connal you'll especially like the urban tree canopy bit to reduce impact of urban heat islands and air pollution.

Excellent, forensic, technical evidence Benedict Ferguson. Which also highlighted the tremendous opportunity which is "behind-the-sub-station" distributed energy. Clean & resilient, this should be a prime focus for Wales. Build-up. Transmission lines? Blunt and largely extractive which push electrons down the wires. But they can't always get down to the local, distributed level and so they flow towards London and SE England (which is their primary purpose). And more and more renewables + grid? That means more and more storage, back-up & balancing. And a higher frequency of near-misses which, if the grid does trip, everybody Hertz. Look-out for what the weather over the next 2 weeks throws at us. And if it isn't this event it will be the next one or the one after that and the big one which is the mid-winter Dunkelflaute. Gas will do all the heavy-lifting when needs are greatest. The session should have been called Energy in Wales - But Mostly for Others. (And energy is much more than electricity.) The best "community benefit" for Wales is to Own It. Ben Lake Llinos Medi Ann Davies Rhun ap Iorwerth
"Frankly, business as usual is going to keep community energy in a chokehold". Co-Executive Director Benedict Ferguson at the Welsh Affairs Committee this morning. Yr ateb? Marchnad ynni lleol.

With the election now called, we know that local communities are best placed to transform lives and create a fairer society. We're urging all parties to make five big reforms: 1️⃣ Introduce a Community Power Act to help local people shape public services, control local investment, and take control of local buildings and spaces. 2️⃣ Create a National Community Ownership Strategy that boosts community ownership and capacity from energy to housing to health. 3️⃣ Put communities in charge of local economic development, giving residents more control over local regeneration spending and devolving employment and skills support to the hyper-local level. 4️⃣ Make collaboration – not competition - the guiding principle of public services. Reform commissioning and shift NHS budgets to community led prevention. 5️⃣ Champion community led housing and neighbourhood planning - giving communities a tangible stake in their neighbourhoods. We believe the blueprint for a better future already exists – and it's right here in communities up and down the country. 🟨 We believe that adaptation to the impacts of #ClimateChange begins at the local level - where we live, work and go to school. ➡️ That's why community consultations are central to UNCDF's work with local governments as they invest in resilience building: www.uncdf.org/local

Fabulous research from Gehl - Making Cities for People highlighting the need to focus on the social function of public spaces. There is so much potential in building and growing strong urban communities, it's essential to share (and follow) the good, tested knowledge. #citiesforpeople #socialinfrastructure #communities #gehl #urbanresearch
In our everyday lives, we interact with social infrastructure — the networks that connect us to each other and to opportunities. Social infrastructure comes in different forms, each facilitating different types of social connection: havens to gather around shared identity, hubs to connect across different backgrounds, and hangouts to just be. This is essential for the health and well-being of societies. When done right, social infrastructure does more than building relationships alone, it advances economic opportunities, climate resilience, and even social and racial justice within communities. A multidisciplinary team led by Gehl visited Belfast, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo to uncover what social infrastructure looks like in action and how further funding, diverse programming, and cross-sector coordination is needed to advance social infrastructure in the U.S. Watch the full video or explore our findings in our report: https://bit.ly/3UFaZQH #socialinfrastructure #cities #gehl #gehlpeople Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Washington Housing Conservancy Reimagining the Civic Commons, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Alysia Osborne, AICP, City of Charlotte, Neil Galway, Andrew Boraine, Washington Fajardo

2moThanks for sharing, Susan. Agree, adaptation is going to be critical as public infrastructure buckles under the strain of repeated extreme weather, significantly multiplying existing inequalities. Huge role for community and third sector - with support of their funders. As Rebecca Gibbs says, applying a resilience lens to our work will be a big impact multiplier in coming years, especially if we can focus on those most at risk.
