I stepped into IIJS, the world's 2nd largest jewellery B2B show, ready to shine. Instead, I found myself drowning in a sea of suits. Where were all the women? As a proud participant in GJEPC's new Startup Section, I was thrilled to showcase my designs at ArohaJewels in #IIJS. However, I couldn’t help but notice a striking paradox at the Show: In an industry where women are the primary consumers, why are we still just 'wearing the jewelry' instead of 'running the show'? The B2B show was overwhelmingly dominated by male manufacturers and Buyers. The absence of women in this space was glaring. It made me think - Are we missing out on diverse perspectives and innovation by not having more women at the helm of manufacturing, trading and Exporting? While applauding the government’s current initiatives, let’s also focus on empowering women in this sector. It's time to reset the gold standard. Here's my 24-karat proposal to the government: 1) Specialised training programs for women Entrepreneurs in jewelry design and manufacturing. 2) Offer financial incentives to women-led jewelry startups. 3) Launch mentorship programs pairing seasoned jewelers with aspiring women manufacturers. 4) Carve out dedicated spaces for women-owned businesses at major trade shows. By bridging this gender gap, we can: *Empower women economically *Infuse fresh perspectives into design *Unlock a wealth of creativity, revolutionizing the industry Isn't it time our jewelry industry reflected the diversity of its customer base? Ever been doubted about your capabilities just because you're a woman? I have. When I started VIVIKA, I faced skepticism from fabric suppliers. The moment they heard a woman on the phone, they assumed am a retailer or I was running a small boutique, not a large-scale operation. Instead of asking about my needs, they'd jump to minimum order quantities, doubting my capability to buy in bulk. Despite progress, the textile industry remains largely unorganized. Family-run businesses, steeped in tradition, often struggle to accept women as serious bulk buyers or manufacturers. The Challenge: ➡️ Suppliers often judge my capacity to buy or sell based on my gender. ➡️ Distributors sometimes ask to speak to my "boss" when I introduce myself as the manufacturer. ➡️ Being based in Hyderabad, a non-traditional textile hub, adds another layer of disbelief. But here's the thing: 🚀 Quality and Determination Speak Louder. 🚀 We provide high-quality apparel at competitive prices, ensuring our wholesalers and distributors get good margins and sell with confidence. 🚀 We value their input in product development, ensuring we meet market demands and have ready buyers before manufacturing. And as I say, good quality + good margins = easy selling. The industry is evolving, and the recognition for women entrepreneurs is improving. However, challenges still persist. We must continue to push for a more inclusive and supportive ecosystem that acknowledges and embraces the contributions of women in manufacturing. This shift is not just beneficial for women entrepreneurs but for the entire industry. To all the women in unorganized sectors, keep pushing boundaries.
