This week Jeffrey Porter shares our Two Cent Tuesday Tip. Ensuring you have strong programs and processes in place to manage your supply base is crucial for meeting your business objectives. Supplier relationship management is key for building resilience and navigating through volatility in the market. By properly diversifying your supplier base, establishing strong relationships, and implementing supply chain risk management processes, you can set your business up for success. Not all suppliers are the same, and it's important to categorize them accordingly. 🔶 Commodity suppliers offer many choices and operate in a transactional relationship. 🔶 Critical suppliers provide custom components and require higher spend. 🔶 Strategic suppliers are crucial to your business and often require a significant investment. Understanding the different levels of supplier relationship management can help you prioritize your efforts and resources where they are needed the most. By effectively managing your suppliers, you can build a more resilient supply chain and drive long-term success for your business. There are also key processes for supplier relationship management. These are: 🔷 Forecasting and Planning Suppliers like to be aware of what’s going on, and what’s coming. You can send suppliers monthly forecast updates and other data, to help give them a better opportunity to meet your needs. For example, when clients use the forecasting tools in StockIQ Technologies they can send those forecasts to suppliers. When suppliers know the quantity of expected demand, value the vendor relationship, and have access to transparent data, they’re oftentimes able to get the product to you faster, and even prioritize your orders. 🔷 Metrics These metrics reflect supplier performance. Common ones to monitor include On-Time Delivery, Cost, Technology, and Responsiveness. 🔷 Business Reviews Conducted monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually, these formal meetings have a structured agenda and might cover updated business topics, cost trends, and history. They’re also an opportunity for you to get to know your supplier’s business better, and better manage risk. #SupplierRelationshipManagement #SupplyChainManagement #BusinessResilience #StrategicPartnerships

Is supplier consolidation still the safest bet? Putting all your eggs in one basket is definitely not the golden strategy for 2024. Leaning too heavily on a few suppliers means a world of pain if just one were to fold. (Red Sea Crisis being the most recent example of this but certainly not the only one) Decisions around suppliers need a more tailored approach. Key takeaways on supplier management: 1. Assess individual instances of requirements for your business using the data available to you. 2. Get a deeper understanding of your supplier base, and how it either increases risk or provides stability. 3. In cases of increased risk, don’t necessarily pull everything out of existing suppliers but source alternative suppliers. 4. Use tools like supplier scorecards, spend analysis, and risk assessments to make smarter decisions.
