In times of crisis (Covid, WWIII etc.), companies with thin operating margins will start laying off people. Then, they will see if they can exploit the crisis by hiring cheaper talent that can meet that demand from the open labour market. Long-term strategic projects will continue to steam ahead, though you can expect planners to restrategize, downsize, delay, switch suppliers and do whatever they can to stretch their budget. To cut short a long story, someone gets thrown overboard.
Traditional job posting channels like JobsDB and MyCareerFuture cater to the background unemployment churn. When unemployment rises, you will see these channels become saturated, turning job seeking into a lottery. That's already happening in various sectors. The silver lining here is that demand drives innovation so the stealth restructuring in Singapore's biomedical sector has driven OneScience to introduce their Lab Operation & Research Deployment (LORD) service which has so far has been gaining traction. That's praise for the entrepreneurial insight from OneScience btw, the status quo is what it is.
LORD caters to the biomedical community, match making experienced professionals with opportunities that value their qualifications and expertise. I gave it a shot after job hunting for more than a year and found a suitable placement within days. YMMV of course but to me, it's clear that OneScience is able to efficiently bridge the particular demands of laboratories and biomedical professionals. How's that for social entrepreneurism?
