Forcing a child to attend school to meet government targets is NOT going to create positive outcomes for the child nor the family. It also doesn't make professionals feel very nice, either! There are SO MANY OTHER WAYS for children to receive a good quality education, WITHOUT affecting their mental and physical health. What are the REAL reasons for school avoidance? It's not that a child is naughty or has bad parents, it's not that they 'want to play truant' or are willfully 'refusing to do the right thing' - we hear these nonsensical claims a lot!!! There are SO many reasons! Mainly down to unmet needs and a mismatch of environments. School avoidance is much more nuanced than many realise. There are multiple compounding variables that could be impacting in a young person's ability to engage within the school context. To truly understand each young person's unique perspective we must enter into the discussion from a place of curiosity and take the time to truly listen to the voice of the young person and the voice of the parent/s. So often parents are viewed as enablers when in fact they are advocates. We need to be open minded and listen to understand, rather to respond and judge.

📣 It's time to prioritise relationships and wellbeing by implementing #nurture approaches in school. During the last academic year, over 22% of pupils in England were classed as ‘persistently absent’. Nurture has been proven to improve attendance, behaviour and attainment, and reduce #exclusions, but also has a positive knock-on effect on school staff too. Teach children the little nuances of using social media responsibly and also be able to determine their wellbeing at the same time. Cybersmarties goes beyond being a training platform.
