Last night I was on a walk with my 9-year-old. As any coach would, I used it as an opportunity to coach her. We were talking about life and I was trying to help her understand, that what seems silly to think about now would pay dividends for her when she’s older. Well, I learned and was reminded of three very important life lessons last night… #1 - We should always be ready for “in the moment” coaching. Whether she wants to admit it or not, she needed to hear what I had to say! Ha. She really did. She’s in her “know it all” era right now… She needs to be listening more than she speaks, but she’s so dang stubborn. There have been plenty of times in my life where I should have been more receiving of advice I did not ask for. It would have saved me some painful moments! #2 - Messing up is not permanent. She is the opposite of me…she’s a perfectionist. She wants to do everything right the first time she tries it. She wants to serve great in volleyball. She wants to hit 3’s over and over again. She wants to make the spelling bee. She wants straight A’s without having to study. But she doesn’t want to practice (and mess up), she just wants to do it right. It’s so frustrating… This quality in her is hard for me to understand because I’m so far in the opposite direction. My slogan is “Ready, fire, aim.” I don’t want to keep planning when I could be trying! We are trying to meet in the middle… If you’re a planner, get out there and fail a little bit! It will be good for you! And if you’re like me, maybe slow down (and actually think first) every once in a while…your team will thank you for it! #3 - Every coach needs to know when to stop coaching. This picture is right after, in the middle of our talk, she just took off running. Now, she swears that she didn’t do it on purpose. But she 100% took off running when she got tired of being coached. I had laid into her for at least 10 minutes before this picture happened. I should have understood my boundaries and done a better job of putting my “dad hat” back on and just loved her. I should have listened at some point instead of only teaching. I did a great job at talking at her, but I did a poor job of talking with her. And there’s a big difference. I don’t know who needed this today…but I know I did! I wish I would have seen a post like this before my next coaching session that wasn’t asked for.

Client Testimonial "I’ve had the pleasure of working with Will Wright as both a personal development coach and a fitness coach. Initially, I was skeptical about personal development coaching, believing I could handle everything myself. However, Will created a comfortable space where I could open up and gain valuable insights into my responses to various stresses. Thanks to Will, I now have greater control over how I handle conflict, making me a better partner both at work and at home. When I learned that Will also offered fitness training, I knew he could help me there too. Went to see Inside Out 2 this weekend with one of my kids' college friends. 🍿 I could have also gone with my 7-year-old nephew, my 12-year-old friend of the family, my elderly parents, or just by myself. Each one of us would have related to the movie in our own way. That may explain the sensation this movie has become. And now Pixar Animation Studios highest-grossing movie of all time ($1.3bln last I checked). The storyline: Riley aspires to join her high school's varsity hockey team - facing new adventures and challenges while dealing with 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁 along the way. Just like many high achievers - Riley faces a relentless inner critic questioning her abilities. I see this all the time in my coaching practice: High achievers who appear brimming with self-confidence on the outside but struggle internally. This movie also introduces us to the power of self-statements. Self-statements are the stories we tell ourselves: -> “I’m not good enough”. -> “I can’t handle this". 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. Riley shifts her self-statements back and forth from the character Joy: "𝗜'𝗺 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻" to the character Anxiety: "𝗜'𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵”. A constant whirlwind of emotions. Self-statements may seem basic to some, even hokey to others. Trust me, I felt the same way. But visualizing success actually has an impact. Think about it. When you tell yourself you can achieve something: • You start to believe it. • You act differently. • You take risks and put in the effort. I used to think, "I’ll give it my best shot, and if it doesn’t work out, that’s okay." Sounds reasonable, right? Wrong. Instead of that wishy-washy, hit-or-miss mindset, try this: "I will be successful". Flip the script. You don’t need a coach to teach you self-statements. Make them visible: • On a post-it note • On a custom mug • Spend 3 minutes a day writing them out on a page It will click! 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. Next time your inner critic rears its ugly head: → simply visualize success and say: “I can handle this.” Oh - and no spoilers, but this was the best Pixar movie ending yet! What did you think? The power of doing something for a long time without falling for needing immediate results is highly undervalued, I believe. Lately, I have had a couple of conversations with people who are interested in becoming coaches. I do not question their intent, nor do I want to say they should become one. The question I like to ask by this point in time, and with the experience I gained and got from other coaches, is, "If it took you 3-5 years before you would make enough money to purely live off coaching, would you do it?" If the answer to this is no, I would recommend looking for another profession or thing to do. If someone tells me in a coaching session that they want to create their dream body and are now 10 kilos overweight, I would ask them a similar question. "Are you prepared to go to the gym for 3 years 3 times a week?." This is not to say that you won't grow your coaching practice in a shorter time. In fact, I have noticed that something very interesting happens when coaches commit to staying on this path for the long haul. The moment they commit to it, the way they act TODAY starts to shift. If there's no rush for immediate results, there's an opening for new ways of being in the very next conversation with someone. - Being non-attached to results. - Being fearless and direct in service of that person. - Being that you don't hold anything back. - Being transparent and honest with yourself and others. - Being slowed down, present and deeply listening. - Being generous without needing anything in return. Before I used to have so many unrealistic expectations, which didn't help but served as a strong pull for doubts, questioning, and thinking that there was something wrong with me. When I could finally drop them, I saw that there was a simple principle I could follow: Keep walking, and the path appears. When I kept walking in a direction the better I became at walking, and the more I started to understand the land I was exploring. At the Being Business Intensive we are creating a powerful space for you to explore where you do Rusch yourself, where you have reason and playing small determine your actions instead of playing full out. A space in which we can be unreasonable in our commitment to action and playing the long game. Next week we will be holding a webinar where you will get an experience of what is available for you in participating in the intensive. Use the link in the comments to register. I see you there.

Hello #linkedincommunity #linkedinforbusiness People say you should let potential clients know HOW you've helped previous clients rather than telling them the boring stuff like what you're trained in and how great you are because all people want to know is how can you help them. This results focused approach is one I'm trying right now with this post using testimonials from previous clients, professionals in sport. Let me know what you think. 🏆“I’ve tried sports psychologists, and read over 15 self-improvement books, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned from working with Mike is that my biggest asset is myself. My wellbeing is 100% better” - Pro athlete 🏆 🧠 Wow! I’ve never experienced coaching like this before! Mostly in books I’ve read they give you techniques like visualisation, positive self-talk, but in this program I actually get to know who I am and what I stand for: I’ve started to realise what are the things that distract me, and the people who negatively influence me." pro athlete 🧠 🌟 “I expected a better personal performance but nothing this drastic! This is the first time in my 10-plus-year career I’ve scored 20 points and not missed a single shot.” pro athlete 🌟 🤝 "Mike has helped me understand what it takes to get me back on track and being the person I want to be. It is up to me to put it into action, but Mike helped me see what was causing my dysfunction and gave me a map to make it better." - Pro sports coach 🤝 have a great day. you deserve to thrive.

When I built my second gym, I thought leadership was all about having the right skills and making the right decisions. I figured if I could train my team well and give them clear instructions, everything would run smoothly. At one point, I did a favor for a friend and hired his son as a coach. He had just graduated with a degree in exercise science, but unlike the rest of our staff, he didn’t have much passion for coaching. He was much more interested in writing programs on his laptop than working with people — especially groups of kids. Every time he had to lead a session, it was clear he wasn’t comfortable. The athletes didn’t connect with him, and the sessions often turned into a mess. I thought the problem was just a lack of experience, so I kept giving him more instructions. I showed him how to run sessions, offered feedback on his communication style, and tried to guide him through what I thought would make him a better coach. But nothing changed. In fact, it got worse—he continued to struggle. At the time, I assumed more time and practice would solve the problem. It wasn’t until years later that I realized I had missed something important. The problem wasn’t his lack of knowledge or skill—it was that he wasn’t passionate about coaching. He didn’t enjoy it. He wasn’t motivated by it. He wasn’t in the right role, and no amount of instruction was going to fix that. Looking back, here’s what I should have done differently: 1. I should have asked him upfront what he really wanted to do. Instead of assuming that more guidance was the answer, I should have listened to his goals and interests. 2. By sharing my own challenges, I could have opened the door for an honest conversation. He might have told me early on that coaching wasn’t for him. 3. Instead of pushing him to fit into a coaching role, I should have helped him find a place where he could thrive. Maybe he would have excelled in program development or another area more aligned with his interests. That experience taught me something crucial about leadership. It’s not just about giving people instructions and expecting results. It’s about understanding what drives them. What motivates them. And helping them find the role where they can excel. --- I’m building a community of coaches who are passionate about helping athletes achieve their full potential. If you’re like me and believe in innovation, passion, and pushing boundaries, let’s connect! Drop me a message or connect with me here on LinkedIn—let’s exchange ideas and resources.
