Coaching that uses positive psychology is different because it looks at what is already going right. (Although often my clients will start off struggling to see their situation that way! Which is completely normal) It leans towards what resources you already have to build on, what strengths you have, what skills and support systems. As your coach I have a focus on always helping you to increase your life satisfaction. That means using different well-being theories and tools in the process. It means that none of the goals you want to achieve should sacrifice your well-being. It means increasing positive emotions and looking at; Connection Meaning Flow Finding your purpose To mention a few! It is about taking into consideration positively impacting your happiness and well-being with every decision you make and every goal you set from today. It’s about getting your sights on +10 life satisfaction. Exciting no?! It is my belief that goals can be achieved without sacrifice. We’ve just been told for so long that this is not the case, that we have to ‘earn’ our happiness in any way that you can ~ essentially meaning pain! No. Not so. No amount of anxiety will change your future and no amount of regret can change your past. The key is acceptance. Do you agree? This statement resonates deeply with me, as I've struggled with depression and understand the profound impact of living with worry and regret. Anxiety about the future can paralyse us, preventing us from taking steps forward. Similarly, regret can trap us in a cycle of self-blame and sorrow, hindering our ability to heal and grow. Acceptance, however, offers a path to peace and progress. For adult children of alcoholics, this journey is especially challenging. The past can cast shadows, influencing behaviours and reactions in ways that aren't always immediately obvious. Many of us find ourselves caught in patterns of fear, distrust, or perfectionism, not realising that these responses are rooted in our early experiences. Understanding that we cannot change our past, but can become more self-aware, is crucial. By recognising these patterns, we can begin to make conscious changes, creating healthier relationships and a more balanced outlook on life. Life coaching played a crucial role in my journey toward acceptance and self-awareness. A coach can help identify the underlying causes of anxiety and regret and provide strategies to address them. Through life coaching, I learned to shift my focus from what I couldn't control to what I could: my reactions, my choices, and my mindset. This shift not only improved my depression but also empowered me to take charge of my future with a clearer, more positive perspective. The quote below really struck a chord with me when I read it a few days ago. It states: “When you empty all your emotional, physical, financial, or relational resources to help another person who doesn’t want to be helped, you will become more and more unhealthy in the process.” -Lysa Terkeurst, Forgiving What You Can’t Forget A lot of times we want to help others because we love them. There is nothing wrong with that. It’s admirable and shows what we value. But what happens when we become unhealthy trying so hard to help others who simply don’t want help or change? How much of ourselves are we willing to give before it becomes toxic for us too? Sometimes we have to simply let people do whatever they are going to do, and take a step back. If you are a people pleaser and just genuinely want the best for everyone, stepping back feels excruciating. I want to remind you that you matter too. Your physical and mental well being are important. You are the only person you are in control of. Please remember to take care of yourself. If you find yourself in a cycle of trying to help others but neglecting yourself, consider working with a life coach. Spending vs. investing: A shift in perspective I don’t know anyone who doesn’t worry about money and time. We all seem to worry about spending both, especially when it comes to ourselves. It's the difference between a scarcity and an abundant mindset. One way to change from a scarcity to abundant mindset is to think about investing versus spending. Although they cost money and/or require time, I consider long walks in nature, books, journaling, meditating, taking continuing education courses, exercise/yoga classes, hiring a coach/therapist, and travelling, as investments in my mental health and wellbeing. For me, they’re essential and non-negotiable. Do you sometimes feel stuck? I mean deep-down unhappy with the way things are for you? Then for goodness sake do something about it! You’re not a tree, rooted to the ground; you’re free to move, change, switch-up, switch-down, evolve! Remember, your personal beliefs and values are constantly shifting as you navigate life; things that mattered to you a couple of decades ago may not hold the same importance any longer? Do yourself a favour and be aware of that! (And yes, there is a session on this in UpThinkers training and coaching programmes btw). Should you wish, you can reinvent yourself; become an updated version of what you have been, and want to be, do or have next… If that seems a bit drastic, how about using the assessment I mentioned to identify what *really* matters to you and tweaking the job you currently do?
