Egyptian Ministry of Transport Launches Advanced Grain Terminal at Dekheila Port Shipping Arabia, August 12, 2024 — In a significant stride towards enhancing its maritime infrastructure, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport has announced the nearing completion of a state-of-the-art clean dry bulk terminal at Dekheila Port. This initiative is aligned with the nation's broader goal to cement its status as a regional leader in transport, logistics, and transit trade, under the vision set forth by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The new facility, situated within the sea adjacent to Dekheila Port, encompasses a quay that stretches over 1,150 meters and features varying depths from 16 to 19 meters, coupled with an extensive hinterland area of 300,000 square meters. This development is set to significantly bolster the port's capacity, specifically targeting the handling and storage of grains and cereals. Once operational, the terminal is projected to enhance the port's annual handling capacity by an additional 6-7 million tons of grains and cereals. Notably, it will stand as the first integrated terminal across Egyptian ports dedicated to grain storage and associated value-added industries. It is also poised to host the highest grain unloading capacity on the Mediterranean Sea, accommodating up to four vessels concurrently, each up to 240 meters in length. This ambitious project, which commenced in January 2022, represents a pivotal element in Egypt's ongoing efforts to develop its maritime ports and reinforces its strategic initiative to transform into a dynamic logistical hub in the region. A few days ago, I attended a meeting at the Cargo Center at JKIA after quite a while. The place was as busy as ever, with the constant activity of containers full of fresh produce moving from the storage sheds to the airside, ready to be shipped to various destinations. I noticed several new structures that have recently come up, which got me thinking about JKIA’s growing role as a cargo gateway and its strategic importance in positioning Kenya competitively across the continent. JKIA sits at the crossroads of major air routes, optimally positioned for connecting flights between Europe and the Southern part of Africa. The ongoing expansion of its cargo facilities—especially the new specialized centers for perishables—enables the airport to handle more volumes and ensure high standards in quality and cold chain management. One particularly exciting development is the addition of dedicated cold rooms for preserving flowers and vegetables, which will help fresh produce exporters maintain the necessary cold chain integrity. The combination of JKIA’s strategic location and these upgrades creates a valuable opportunity for the fresh produce export sector. To make the most of these improvements, sector players can invest in specialized handling equipment like automated loaders to speed up loading and reduce handling time. There’s also potential in adopting digital tools for tracking, planning, and communication, all of which help simplify operations. Additionally, exporters can develop expertise in cold chain management by investing in infrastructure and training which will enhance product quality. These advancements make JKIA an even more powerful hub for fresh produce exports, offering numerous opportunities for fresh produce market expansion.
