My contract at Soduma Logistics has come to an end. Although the sound of this may not be appealing, the skills I have gained through this internship are remarkable. Through this internship, I acquired more than I envisioned I would. I came to realize that one's capabilities are not solely defined by the degree one holds, but rather by the depth of skills and passion one possesses. Previously, proficiency with tools like Excel wasn't within my self-proclaimed expertise. Excel is one of the Microsoft tools I was limited to using, but I am glad to have the chance to realize that I don't need a degree to be able to use such tools. Discovering the opportunity at Soduma Logistics served as a powerful reminder that with a bit of encouragement and support, even the loftiest goals become attainable. It illuminated the path forward, showcasing that a simple push can unlock a world of possibilities. To Soduma Logistics Director, William Maphanga, thank you for being an exceptional leader and for directing me with kindness and patience. Your leadership has been remarkable and has promoted growth in my career. The skills I gained through the internship (Market Research Analyst) did not only limit me to the Bachelor of Arts stream. Through this opportunity, I acquired data analysis, supply chain knowledge, industry knowledge, forecasting and planning, communication skills, project management, critical thinking, and adaptability. I get to leave with these skills and knowledge, knowing that the contract does not only come to an end but I depart with skills that I have never had. 😍

✨ Intern Spotlight: Sally Hudson ✨ In the Department of Supply Chain Management, experiential learning is the foundation of everything we do and a core reason why our students are well-equipped for the supply chain industry upon graduation. With that, every student majoring in Supply Chain Management is required to intern with a company to gain real, hands-on work experience. Today we check in with Sally and her role with Simmons Foods as a Procurement Intern in the Pet Food Division: Q: What was the best part of being an intern? A: The best part of being an intern is getting to network and learn about all the roles that work together to keep a company successful. I enjoy Simmons Foods because they have allowed me to work with many different teams, which has allowed me to understand how they all work cross-functionally. I also enjoy being able to connect my school work with real life procurement work. Q: How had your supply chain management classes prepared you for the internship? A: I have learned so much from guest speakers who talk about their careers in supply chain and have discussions with my peers and I during class. Additionally, I was prepared because I got to see all aspects of the supply chain by taking my logistics, procurement, and general supply chain classes. Learning about all aspects of the supply chain really help me better understand what is happening within the company even though I mostly work with the procurement team. Q: What is some advice you would give other students that are about to start an internship? A: My advice to a fellow student would be to research the company to have a better understanding of their values, company culture, and how they function as a whole. Also, I would recommend keeping in touch with professors because they are always there to help with questions you may have about a specific topic or know someone who can help. Finally, I would advise a fellow student to learn what they can in class and take good notes. They will come in handy when you need to refresh your knowledge on special skills and topics. #SupplyChainU

Today we check in with Soumya and her role with Walmart as an Area Manager Intern at Distribution Center 6047 in Bedford, Pennsylvania: Q: What is the best part of being an intern? A: The best part of being an intern is being given the opportunity to be able to learn and absorb as much information as possible. You can learn so much more doing the job compared to learning from a textbook. It is a great honor to have a voice from a fresh perspective and make an impact on business decisions. Q: How has your supply chain management classes prepared you for the internship? A: My supply chain management classes have prepared me for this job by teaching me a bunch of concepts and terminology to be able to have a good foundation and speak educated in meetings. Whether I am talking about inventory checking processes or simple inbound and outbound terms, Walton College SCMT classes have shaped me for this moment. I am also able to take conversations discussed in class and apply it to business practices. Q: What is some advice you would give other students that are about to start an internship? A: Do not be afraid to insert yourself into work conversations and always ask questions even if you think they are dumb. Sometimes it can be challenging to assert yourself as an intern, but usually people want to help if you just ask. On top of that, make sure to network and use your resources as much as possible. #SupplyChainU
