Find out how much carbon emissions the images on your website are creating! The internet is pretty unsustainable at the moment (if it was a country it would be the 7th largest emitter of CO2 pollution!) 😬 And all of our websites are playing a part in this! 💪 A small change that can make a big difference is to optimise your images. This free calculator is amazing. It tells you: 🔶 How much CO2 your images are creating (in kilos and in equivalents like how much gas, how many cups of coffee…) ❌ Which images are most problematic 🔧How you can change it It’s really practical and really easy to understand even if you're not into tech. Digital Carbon Emissions: A Call to Action for a Greener Web =========================== Did you know that every time a webpage loads, it leaves a carbon footprint? On average, a single webpage emits around 0.75 grams of CO₂ per view. At 1 million views per month, that’s a staggering 9,000 kg (9 metric tons) of CO₂ per year from just one site. This is equivalent to the emissions of a diesel car driving over 22,500 miles, or boiling 1,080,000 liters of water! • While we often see the web as “clean” energy, our digital actions have a real impact. Every website visit, video stream, or email contributes to global emissions. With billions of people online daily, this adds up fast. Let's make a difference: - Optimize websites to use fewer resources. - Switch to green hosting providers. - Advocate for energy-efficient web design. Together, we can lower digital carbon emissions and help build a sustainable future. Let's go green for a healthier planet! #SiteBeacon #DigitalCarbon #SustainableWeb #GreenTech #EcoFriendly #MakeADifference #GreenHosting #CarbonFootprint #GreenEnergy #WebHosting #CarbonNeutral #EnvironmentallyFriendly

In today's digital world, website performance is crucial for user satisfaction and environmental sustainability. Allow me to explain how improving Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) can lead to a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions while also enhancing the user experience. #pagespeed #lcp #corewebvitals #lowcarbonfootprint #environmentalsustainability #webdevelopment #frontend

What's the digital and water footprint of your organisation? It's a topic that Women in Sustainability Network covered yesterday in a webinar with Marketa Benisek from Wholegrain Digital. I knew about fossil fuel carbon but had no idea how much water the internet consumes (to keep cool). Here are just some of my action-points as a result of the webinar (most of these are really easy so don't be put off): - use a virtual background on Zoom and turn off camera when watching webinar content - calculate the carbon of my key web pages using https://lnkd.in/e_5FruAi - ditch the short reply emails that are unnecessary and cost carbon - delete unwanted emails (categorising emails as FROM helps to delete several in one go) - delete old web pages - delete files I no longer need - change the resolution of my website photos and investigate WEBP and AVIF file types instead of JPEG - use photos and play buttons for embedded videos - create a short email signature for follow-up emails - use more links rather than attachments in emails Thanks Rhian Sherrington FRSA, Founder / Head Coach for bringing such valuable content to your WINS members. #sustsainability #digitalfootprint #carbonemissions

Can anyone tell me how many grams of CO2 are emitted reading this post? People have asked, how can a website produce CO2? Anything that requires electricity produces CO2 somewhere along the line. As we finetune our new website, cleaning up our media library, optimizing photos and identifying missing links, only now are we looking at its carbon footprint. Perhaps not a new idea in the IT world, the concept of a green website is not something many people are aware of let alone factor into their decision-making. It is interesting that of all the questions and quotes we got from web developers, not one asked what carbon rating we would tolerate. What are the implications for instance of aiming for an A+ on the Website carbon calculator? Shadylanes.com au has managed to but for the average non-technical website owner we need our developers to ask the question and help us reach an informed decision in the design phase and throughout development and on-going implementation. The translation to "trees per year" to compensate is very apt for all bushland lovers. The websites of some of our biggest environmental champions are rated D or even F. Perhaps it is time for some awareness raising. There is plenty of information out there, but unless we know to look, we will not find it. Thanks Gayle Dallaston for the heads up. Did you know the Internet could outpace major countries in energy consumption? 🌍💡 In 2022, among giants like China, the US, and India, the internet's carbon footprint would rank astonishingly high, just above Russia and Brazil. But here's the catch: we have the power to change this narrative. I've recently delved into Sustainable Web Design and it's been a game-changer. Acknowledging the internet's role in our climate crisis is the first crucial step. Next, it's about taking actionable steps to mitigate its impact. To kickstart your journey towards a more sustainable digital footprint, I highly recommend: 1. "Sustainable Web Design" by Tom Greenwood for an insightful read. 2. Engaging with the principles laid out in the Sustainable Web Manifesto (https://lnkd.in/dnjFzrs5). Let's pave the way for a greener, cleaner digital world together. #SustainableWeb #ClimateAction" Data based on ITC's total emissions from a 2021 study by Freitag et al. compared with fossil CO2 emissions by country, using data from 2022 from the European Union's Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR)

Sustainable IT: Did you quickly want to understand the Carbon (CO2e) Emission for your web portal? You may go here: https://lnkd.in/g3RbJDMn. Of course, carbon measurement from software code is not yet perfect and there is lot to be done, but it surely gets you some idea where you stand. Time has come to do at least our part to ensure a Sustainable IT and Sustainable world. Thank You! Research indicates since 1800, on an average the global temperature has increased by 1 degree Celsius. 2023 was the hottest year since then. Carbon emission has increased by 50% since 1800. #sustainability, #sustainableIT, #greenenergy

🚨 Digital Cleanup Day: 18. März 2024 Get involved - clean up your individual IT structures! Companies pump 5.8 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year to archive unused data! A total of 900 million tons of CO2 is emitted annually - due to the Internet and its supporting systems. Deleting data and cleaning up digital waste can help reduce these CO2 emissions! Just turning off your video camera during a video call saves 55g of CO2 emission per hour. And searching 100 queries on the internet causes 20g of CO2 emissions. A nice side effect: in addition to reducing environmental impact, the digital cleanup also has a lasting impact on your work processes by re-opening server space. Clean up - throw away! Files, apps that are no longer needed, duplicate photos and videos, newsletters and emails without any further use. Plan your digital cleanup - Find an easy-to-follow weekly plan here:

What’s your website’s carbon footprint? 👣 🤔 I’ve spoken on this topic before, but it’s something I want to touch on again as we continue to promote brand impact regarding the planet. The internet and all the devices we use every day emit more carbon than the aviation industry. And this is increasing every day! One thing we can do when we’re building websites is to make them as energy-efficient as possible which makes your users, search engines and the planet happy. Head over to the Website Carbon website (Link in the comments 👇) to check your website’s score today. If you’d like help after seeing your score, let us know!
