As a structural engineer, it is very disheartening to such events take place. These type of incidents can be prevented by using a little bit of engineering. I think it is high time designers and contractors start taking this seriously and instead of using the thumb rules, do some actual engineering.
🌈 In high-rise projects, chair bars are commonly used to maintain the proper spacing and positioning of reinforcement bars in slabs. These are small steel bars that act as spacers, ensuring the top reinforcement layer stays at the required cover distance from the bottom reinforcement.
📌 Common Specifications of Chair Bars in Slabs:
1️⃣ Diameter:
Typically, chair bars are made from 10mm or 12mm diameter bars depending on the load and spacing requirements.
2️⃣ Height:
The height of the chair bar is based on the thickness of the slab and the spacing between the top and bottom reinforcement layers.
For slabs in high-rise projects, the height usually ranges from 50mm to 200mm, depending on the slab thickness.
3️⃣ Spacing:
Chair bars are spaced at 600mm to 1m center-to-center in both directions, depending on the load distribution and design requirements..
4️⃣ Shape:
Chair bars are often bent into triangular or inverted U-shapes for stability.
5️⃣ Material:
High-grade steel (e.g., Fe500) is used to ensure adequate strength and durability.
Proper placement and anchoring of chair bars are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of reinforced concrete slabs in high-rise buildings.

As a structural engineer, the recent news of the #Ghatkopar hoarding collapse in Mumbai due to the powerful storm has deeply saddened and concerned me. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families affected by this tragic incident.
This unfortunate event underscores the critical importance of ensuring the structural integrity of our built environment, particularly in areas prone to extreme weather conditions. It's imperative that we prioritize safety measures and adhere to rigorous standards in construction and maintenance to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
The irony is not lost on us that this hoarding was once a Guinness World Record holder, a symbol of achievement and recognition. Yet, today, it stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting structural safety.
As professionals in the field, we must advocate for the essential role of structural engineering in construction projects. Our expertise is not a luxury but a necessity for ensuring the safety and longevity of structures. Collaboration between different stake holders and structural engineers is paramount to achieving optimal outcomes and safeguarding the lives of those who inhabit these spaces.
In the wake of this incident, let us come together as a community to demand greater respect for structural engineering expertise and to reinforce the importance of collaboration in construction projects. Let us learn from this tragedy and work towards a future where the expertise of structural engineers is valued and integrated into every stage of the building process.
May we honor their memory by advocating for a safer built
environment for all.

There are numerous such unsafe hoardings that has been erected in Mumbai...
For a region to be designed for 44m/s, these mishaps happened for just less than 15m/s.
There is a provision to certify hoarding structures capable of taking design loads confirming appropriate regulatory codes (including wind/ seismic/gravity/erection loads).
We as structural peer reviewers, can precisely point out discrepancies in the structural designs.
The submission for peer review should include:
1. Design basis report
2. Geotechnical investigation report clearly recommending founding criteria
3. Loads basis clearly mentioning gravity and lateral loads (wind & seismic loads as per criteria mentioned in DBR)
4. Computational analysis model & elements design.
5. Detailed schematic drawings
6. Detailed connection designs
7. Detailed fabrication and GFC drawings
8. Supervisor's certificate confirming erections as per GFCs drawings and specifications.
9. As built drawings
10. QA/QC confirmation
11. Erection method statement
12. HSE confirmation
13. Structural specifications
I am pretty sure, the position grabbers do not want to follow all these procedures mentioned.
Who killed/ injured innocent citizens? Will any punitive action be taken on such designers?

⁉️ A capping link (capping beam) in commercial high-rise projects connects structural elements to distribute loads and ensure stability.
📌 Differences in Capping Links: Commercial High-Rise vs. Residential Construction ❓
1. Load and Structural Demands:
- 🏢 Commercial High-Rise: Higher loads, robust capping links.
- 🏡 Residential: Lower loads, simpler capping beams.
2. Design Complexity:
- 🏢 Commercial High-Rise: Complex designs, advanced techniques.
- 🏡 Residential: Simple designs, traditional methods.
3. Materials and Techniques:
- 🏢 Commercial High-Rise: High-strength materials, cutting-edge construction.
- 🏡 Residential: Standard materials, conventional techniques.
4. Construction Timeline and Coordination:
- 🏢 Commercial High-Rise: Fast-paced, high coordination.
- 🏡 Residential: Flexible timelines, simpler coordination.
