To all of my fellow private equity enthusiasts, let's talk about soft power and its potential to shake up the world of private equity. Soft power extends beyond mere persuasion or the ability to sway individuals through argumentation; it encompasses the capacity to attract, often resulting in acquiescence. Unlike hard power, which relies on inducements (carrots) or threats, soft power is attractive power. It leverages resources to generate this appeal, creating a state of openness without explicit demands on the audience. Typically, the content of soft power is symbolic or metaphorical, reinforcing values and norms through narrative. A great example of this narrative is the Michelin guide. When André Michelin and his brother assumed control of their grandfather's company, they transformed it from a hose manufacturer into a tire company. While this shift resurrected their family legacy, it failed to address a fundamental issue of the time: the scarcity of automobiles and the insufficient wear and tear on tires due to limited usage. To encourage the purchase of tires, André ingeniously promoted the concept of travel by introducing the Michelin Guide as a complimentary resource for motorists. By doing so, he tapped into people's innate desire for adventure and exploration, subtly guiding them towards the inevitable conclusion of purchasing new tires. The guide barely mentions tires; instead, it fosters an aspiration for travel. These principles remain relevant today. Apple doesn't forcibly impose iPhones on consumers; rather, it appeals to their desires and needs. Similarly, by popularizing narratives centered around sustainability, diversity, inclusion, and equity in a way that resonates with core values, we can catalyze widespread impact, both intangible and tangible.
