Here are some funny and interesting facts about self-storage. Odd Items Stored. People have stored some bizarre items in self-storage units, including a 10-foot-tall Egyptian sarcophagus, a human skeleton (for educational purposes), and even a fully functional car that a customer forgot they owned. Reality TV Fame. The popularity of self-storage surged thanks to reality TV shows like "Storage Wars," where abandoned units are auctioned off to bidders hoping to find treasure among the junk. Booming Industry. The self-storage industry in the U.S. generates more revenue than the entire U.S. music industry, with annual revenues over $39 billion. Guinness World Records. The smallest self-storage unit on record is just 1 cubic foot, designed to store a single item like a piece of jewelry. Seasonal Surge. There is a noticeable increase in the demand for storage units right after major holidays and before the start of school terms, as people look to declutter or store seasonal items. Creative Uses. Some people have turned their storage units into unconventional spaces, such as personal gyms, artist studios, or even mini film studios. Famous Tenants. Several celebrities use self-storage units for their personal belongings. For instance, Paris Hilton once forgot about a storage unit filled with personal items, which was subsequently auctioned off and some items ended up online. Millionaire Owners. One in every ten Americans rents a self-storage unit, and some of these renters include millionaires who need extra space for their collections of art, cars, or wine.
