🌎 #WORLDENVIRONMENTDAY 💡 We can't turn back time, but we can grow #forests, restore #water sources, and restore soils. We are the generation that can make peace with the #earth. 🏡 Construction can also do its part. How? 5️⃣ For example with innovative tools such as #LEED v5. The latest version of the globally recognized global framework for #greenbuilding has been developed around three main impact areas: #decarbonisation, quality of #life and ecological #conservation and #restoration. ✅ This latter area emphasizes precisely those strategies that limit #environmental degradation and contribute to the restoration of ecosystems, ensuring that our built environment exists in harmony with nature and biophilic principles. 🎯 Get involved! #generationrestoration #5june

We’re not just about land development—we’re about building a future. With every property developed, we plant 1,000 trees. Why? Because we believe in creating something bigger than ourselves—cleaner air, restored habitats, and a greener world for the next generation. 🌍 Join us on this journey as we redefine what it means to invest in land and give back to the earth. One deal, 1,000 trees at a time. #thegorillafund #1000trees

Move over Do Not Demolish – how about Do Not Excavate? This week, Dan Matthews explains how soil is the construction industry’s biggest carbon sink and underpins all biodiversity. The first metre deep of topsoil is the second greatest carbon sink after the oceans. Disturb the soil and it releases carbon. Matthews argues that we need to move to a ‘where possible, do not excavate’ approach. And some local councils already have, including Essex, which insists on desk-based research before digging. But the value of soil doesn't end with carbon: Soil also harbours 58% of the planet’s biodiversity. So why isn't it measured in Biodiversity Net Gain calculations? "If we are going to make development more sustainable, we need to bring soil biodiversity into the equation," writes Matthews. "It’s healthy soil that underpins all habitats, ecosystems and food systems. It is integral to healthy lives." Read more here about how to be kinder to the soil: https://lnkd.in/ggcm34Nh If you value what we do and the knowledge we amplify, please consider supporting us – encourage your company to sign up as an organisation member and you'll get our uncommonly beautiful magazine and tickets to all our events. Carbon Direct and Meta have published a report on opportunities for ecological restoration in the voluntary carbon market (link in the comments). It covers barriers to ecological restoration projects and provides a roadmap to guide buyers to best support ecological restoration. Key takeaways: 🔸 In 2022, nature-based projects represented about 17 percent of voluntary carbon credit project issuances from the four largest registries. 🔸 However, all project types were not well represented. Afforestation, reforestation and revegetation (ARR), wetland and mangrove restoration, and improved forest management (IFM) accounted for just 13 percent of these nature-based issuances despite their great potential to remove carbon from the atmosphere. So how to accelerate the supply of these restoration projects? The report called for clear demand signals; innovative carbon project design; adapt rules to better suit restoration projects; deploy blended finance tools and build the “missing middle” between local implementers and international buyers. #NatureBasedSolutions #MangroveRestoration #LandManagement Marc Baker Jo Anderson Anna Lerner Nesbitt Eric Wilburn Rene Velasquez Sarah Borman Adriana Guardans-Godo Anna Scott Ed Hewitt Lucy Almond

Today is World Environment Day. This year’s theme is ‘Our Land. Our Future’, focusing on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. A number of years ago at our Gaskell Sand Quarry in Western Australia, we decided to restore what the natural vegetation was, which is Banksia Woodlands. We partnered with researchers at the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority in WA to achieve successful regeneration and land restoration outcomes for Banksia Woodlands. As we celebrate World Environment Day, we reflect on our efforts from this restoration project and look forward to sharing more projects that highlight our commitment to sustainability.
