The Giants are getting Bigger and More Powerful, and a cool new innovation for greenhouse workers. All 3 stories were reported in Hortidaily.com. Cox Enterprises bought BrightFarms in 2021, as it has been doing with other companies, like Mucci Farms. “Cox has invested over $2 billion in eco-friendly businesses and technologies.” Through Cox Farms, its new venture into controlled environment agriculture, BrightFarms is embarking on “an ambitious expansion plan for 2024, adding 3 more projects around the southern US. Once fully built, the three new greenhouses will have 7x BrightFarms' growing capacity, adding nearly 100 acres.” BrightFarms is set to serve more than two-thirds of the U.S. population, aiming to generate over $300 million in revenue by 2026.” Watch out for Cox Farms- they are setting up to become one of the largest CEA companies in the world, in the near future. And in another story of one of the largest CEA players getting even larger, “Mastronardi Produce has acquired full and exclusive North American rights in Mastronardi Berry World America from its partner BerryWorld® Group.” Previously, “this partnership provided access to BerryWorld's proprietary berry varieties and was aimed at leveraging Mastronardi Produce 's work in greenhouse growing and BerryWorld's berry breeding and marketing capabilities.” Now, in connection with the buyout, “Mastronardi Produce will continue to hold exclusive rights to market all premium berry proprietary varieties in North America that were previously licensed to Mastronardi BerryWorld America, in addition to all future proprietary berries developed under such licenses. This extends over all four berry categories including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.” To me, these expansions are perfectly logical from these companies’ perspectives, but a bit alarming as to its impact on our industry. How large is too large? And when does “huge” become a monopoly? And finally, a cool new innovation for greenhouse transportation invented by Johan Velting at www.workstep.nl. The Workstep was just invented. “Its, a small, stable, and sturdy four-wheel electric cart for the price of a bicycle," "It can go forward, and backward, meets health and safety requirements, and is safe, light, and affordable." "You can safely carry something, and the Workstep can be extended with a coupling (for CC carts) allowing it to pull up to 500 kilos, which is about four carts. And yes, it's just a nice little electric cart that can be used for multiple purposes." Very cool. What do you think?
