Through the York County Alliance for Learning Career Exploration Program, we enjoyed hosting high school students interested in pursuing a career in law. Attorney Steve Ahlbrandt led the conversation as students listened to: - an overview of our firm's practice areas & - our attorneys' undergrad experiences leading up to law school and ultimately landing at our firm We answered students' inquiries, including: - suggested undergrad courses to prepare for law school - explaining LSAT & how to approach applying for law school - what life is like as an attorney To finish the day, students walked to the courthouse to observe a hearing, ask the Judge questions, and learn about various personnel roles in the courtroom. My friend graduated #1 in our law school class at UNC Chapel Hill. I asked him for his one key to performing well on law school finals… This is what he told me: “Embrace ambiguity.” Here’s why: 1. Law school exams rarely have one "correct" conclusion. Most law school exam fact patterns are intentionally vague, encouraging students to explore both sides. So, the ultimate goal isn’t to provide a correct conclusion. Instead, the goal of a law school exam is to navigate and analyze ambiguities. You’re rewarded for analyzing both sides of any given issue, so don’t leave points on the table by only addressing one side. 2. Professors reward the most points for the “analysis” portion of the answer. Unlike undergrad, you’re not really being tested on memorization and regurgitation. Instead, your professor wants to see you analyze a fact pattern and apply the law to the facts. Your written answer should be filled with facts from the exam's fact pattern. Take a look at the two sample answers below to see the difference. The first answer isn’t “wrong.” It’s likely enough for a B- or even a B. The second answer, however, is far better. Non-lawyers and aspiring lawyers—do you see the difference?

Future law students, Do everything you can to get a job in the legal field before you go to law school. Working at Jacob Jensen & Associates for two years while I was an undergrad was one of the best things to prepare me for law school and a future career as an attorney. I'll forever be grateful they took a chance on a kid with practically no prior experience. 🙏 Working in the legal field before heading to law school will: - Set you apart on Law School applications 📃 - Introduce you to Attorneys and kickstart your network 🌟👨🏿⚖️👩🏼⚖️ - Help you decide if you even want to go to law school (or, solidify your decision) ❓️ - Give you practical, hands-on experience with the law that will allow you to better understand and apply the dense, theoretical doctrines of Law School 📚 What other benefits have you seen from working in the legal field before law school? #lawschool #futurelawstudent #1L

Caleb Scott, Rylee Sullivan, and Keeli Wallace may not have always had their sights set on law school, but their shared passion for helping others through public service, and in one case, sheer fate, brought all three to the William H. Bowen School of Law. This week, they are all expected to graduate with juris doctorate degrees. And though the road to law school was different for each of them, the start of their careers as attorneys will have the same starting point. Read the full article to learn more about their journey to law school and their career plans after graduation! https://lnkd.in/gyimhzNT
