🎉 I was honored and humbled Thursday evening at Washington State University Vancouver to be recognized as a 2024 Learn Here Hero for Southwest Washington. Although the plaque has my name on it this award is really a testament to the dedication of all the students, volunteers, and staff at the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) who have made the Tandem Cycling Program a lasting success over the past 20 years. In 2005, with my North River Racing teammates, we had a simple vision: to create a safe space where WSSB students could experience the thrill, challenge, and joy of cycling. With the leadership of Adrienne Fernandez, WSSB's Recreation Director and an invaluable partner for 20 years, our vision took shape and grew into one of the school's most cherished activities. This award reflects the courage, determination, and resilience of our student Stokers who inspire us with every ride (try riding blindfolded on the back of a tandem to experience those qualities), as well as the commitment of our tandem Captains who give generously of their time. *** If you are cyclist in the Vancouver/Portland area and want the experience of a lifetime, join the WSSB Captain Corps – DM me to jump on board. *** Thank you to WSSB’s supportive staff, who have championed this program at every stage, and to the leaders whose dedication has helped shape its success, including Ole Helgerson, Clay Kind, Mike Bingle, Larry Holzman, Tom Simon, John Piper , Jon Kraft, Monica Wolfe, North River Racing, and the VANCOUVER BICYCLE CLUB. Each ride— on our 229 rides we’ve logged over 21,000 miles —has been a journey of teamwork, communication, friendship and community. The Learn Here Heroes Program recognizes those who help build a culture of learning in our communities. As one of those honored this year, I accept this recognition on behalf of all who’ve made the Tandem Cycling Program at the WSSB what it is today. Here’s to 20 more years of riding safe, having fun, and inspiring one another! Special accolades to Identity Clark County's, Kristen Holl, Lorraine L. and Ron Arp; iQ Credit Union, Port of Vancouver USA and Wyndemere Northwest Living for helping make Southwest Washington THE place to Land, Live and Learn, for a Lifetime! *** In case you missed this above... 😉 ...If you are cyclist in the Vancouver/Portland area and want the experience of a lifetime, join the WSSB Captain Corps – DM me to jump on board. *** RIDE SAFE. HAVE FUN. 🚴♂️ #CommunitySupport #LearnHereHero
