We express our heartfelt sympathy to the Ultra-Orthodox men and women during this challenging time. The recent Supreme Court decision mandating military service for all Israeli citizens, including the Ultra-Orthodox community, is a significant shift with profound implications. We understand the deep-rooted religious commitments that define the lives of the Haredi community. For many, the primary focus on religious study and spiritual duties has been a central part of their identity and tradition. This echoes a historical precedent found in the Book of Joshua, where it is written, "To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them" (Joshua 13:33). This passage reflects the ancient tradition of setting aside a group within the Jewish community to serve religious and spiritual roles, separate from the military and political duties of the rest of the nation. However, we also recognize the perspective of the broader Israeli society, which views mandatory military service as a crucial element of national unity and security. The principle of equal responsibility in defending the nation is a foundational aspect of the Israeli social contract, and many citizens feel that everyone should share this burden equally. In light of these differing perspectives, it is vital to approach this situation with empathy and a willingness to understand the deeply held beliefs and values of all involved. We hope for a resolution that respects the religious convictions of the Ultra-Orthodox community while addressing the societal need for shared civic responsibilities. Dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to finding a balanced solution are essential as we navigate this complex and sensitive issue. May we find a way forward that honors our shared heritage and values while accommodating the diverse expressions of our faith and commitments.

Luna Sofía Piña Sáenz Andrea Katalina Ávila Cortázar grupo : c Objectification of conscience in military service Conscious objection in military service stands as a mechanism for the protection of fundamental rights, especially highlighting the safeguarding of freedom of thought and religion. This right is enshrined in both Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which establishes that no one may be compelled to carry out actions contrary to their religious convictions or conscience. Furthermore, the Political Constitution of Colombia of 1991 ratifies this principle, guaranteeing freedom of conscience and prohibiting any imposition contrary to the moral and religious convictions of individuals. However, it is important to keep in mind that conscious objection is subject to certain limitations established by law, which focus on maintaining the well-being and social order of the country. To exercise this right, it is necessary to follow a rigorous process: it must be presented in writing and then verbally support the reasons that led to making this decision. This presentation must be evaluated by professionals specialized in the matter, who will determine if the reasons presented are legitimate and profound. Within the Colombian legal framework, two types of conscious objection are distinguished. On the one hand, there is the contra legem objection, which implies failure to comply with a legal obligation due to reasons of conscience, accepting the legal consequences that this entails. On the other hand, we find the secundum legem objection, where what is established by law is accepted but the responsibility to abide by the legal consequences of non-compliance is recognized. In both cases, the performance of an activity or social benefit substituting military service is required. Those individuals who decide to consciously object must have an adequate level of knowledge and study on the subject. Ignorance of legal and ethical foundations could lead people to act against their own ideals without presenting a formal objection. Therefore, it is crucial that those who choose this path are properly informed and prepared to defend their convictions in a well-founded and responsible manner. In conclusion, conscious objection in military service represents an act of deep reflection on personal convictions and their relationship with the obligations established by law. It is a process that requires a firm commitment to ethical and legal principles, as well as a willingness to assume the consequences that may arise from this decision. Only through deep understanding and reasoned justification can this right be exercised effectively and responsibly.

Wikipedia lists the themes of The Life and Times of Michael K by J M Coetzee as the value of life, mother/son enmeshment, time, military authority, and race, but I read it as a book about the dehumanising effects of apartheid and the need to end an iniquitous system. https://lnkd.in/e-SrU-w9

Court martial proceedings against General Faiz Hameed and his allies mark a significant and commendable step by the Pakistan Army in addressing the serious misconduct that has brought a bad name for the army as an institution. It is essential that those responsible for exploiting their positions for personal and political gains should face appropriate consequences. Additionally, Pakistan’s intelligence agencies and armed forces must reassess their strategies to address critical lapses, especially those that contributed to the events of May 9, 2023. There is a pressing need to investigate how and who provided information to social media influencers and “revolutionary anchors” (sic) that fueled anti-military sentiments. In the light of strategic threats facing the country, it is imperative to maintain a strong, morally upright military and intelligence apparatus. Any attempt to defame these institutions must be taken seriously, as they are critical to national security. https://lnkd.in/deT_zgsg

I am an American conservative with deep roots in Israel, born in Tel Aviv to a father who served in the U.S military. I stand firmly with Israel. Israel is not just the land of my birth; it is a beacon of democracy and freedom in a region where such values are often under threat. As a proud American , I believe in the power of democracy, the rule of law, and the right to self-determination. Israel exemplifies these principles, upholding a democratic system that ensures its citizens' voices are heard and respected, despite the relentless challenges to its very existence. Our shared Judeo-Christian values, the historical bonds, and the strategic partnership between the United States and Israel are pillars of my political belief system. I support Israel's right to defend itself, to thrive as a sovereign nation, and to maintain its identity as a homeland for the Jewish people. As an Israeli-American, I urge my fellow conservatives to stand unwaveringly with Israel, to advocate for its security, and to champion the shared ideals that unite us across continents. Together, we can ensure that the light of democracy continues to shine brightly in the Middle East, guided by the enduring strength and spirit of the Israeli people.
