Steven Hanssen’s Post

We express our heartfelt sympathy to the Ultra-Orthodox men and women during this challenging time. The recent Supreme Court decision mandating military service for all Israeli citizens, including the Ultra-Orthodox community, is a significant shift with profound implications. We understand the deep-rooted religious commitments that define the lives of the Haredi community. For many, the primary focus on religious study and spiritual duties has been a central part of their identity and tradition. This echoes a historical precedent found in the Book of Joshua, where it is written, "To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them" (Joshua 13:33). This passage reflects the ancient tradition of setting aside a group within the Jewish community to serve religious and spiritual roles, separate from the military and political duties of the rest of the nation. However, we also recognize the perspective of the broader Israeli society, which views mandatory military service as a crucial element of national unity and security. The principle of equal responsibility in defending the nation is a foundational aspect of the Israeli social contract, and many citizens feel that everyone should share this burden equally. In light of these differing perspectives, it is vital to approach this situation with empathy and a willingness to understand the deeply held beliefs and values of all involved. We hope for a resolution that respects the religious convictions of the Ultra-Orthodox community while addressing the societal need for shared civic responsibilities. Dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to finding a balanced solution are essential as we navigate this complex and sensitive issue. May we find a way forward that honors our shared heritage and values while accommodating the diverse expressions of our faith and commitments.
