I have been very fortunate that most of my career was working with leaders and colleagues that demonstrated these traits. Like many of us, I have also had a few instances where this was not the case. I learned that when you are in this situation it takes a toll both professionally and personally, and ultimately is not the type of culture that delivers high performance. In the words of Peter Drucker, "culture eats strategy for breakfast". If you are struggling with creating an empowering culture reach out and I will share some more lessons learned.

What a refreshing way to look at life. Our natural drive is to protect ourselves. So we naturally see red flags first! But the awesome thing about us is that we can redirect our thinking and mindset to see the green flags. Red flags protect us by stopping us which is good and necessary at times but can also limit our growth and stop us from unlocking opportunities to connect. Can’t help but think that if we focus more on seeing the green flags in people, we’ll see wonderful people we maybe missed before. I’m looking at myself and reflecting on how I am doing in the green flags below. I’ve got some areas of where I can improve. That’s good as reflection helps me grow. Feeling “safe” in an environment speaks VOLUMES to the team you are in! Nobody wants to be surrounded by coworkers that you constantly have to filter yourself, protect yourself, or defend yourself. We all NEED an environment that encourages us, feeds us, & supports us. Anyone in any kind of environment that we are constantly defending ourselves or actions, constantly on “high alert”, constantly on defense or on edge is deteriorating the basic foundation of our team. When you are in an environment or have a leader you feel comfortable enough to share your struggles, concerns, self-doubt, & self-worth with speaks VOLUMES to the leadership, compassion, empathy, & caring. The idea of of anyone LESS than that is a HUGE step backwards. Recognize your succession plans now. BEFORE you move on and leave “your team” in chaos. Train them. Coach them. Counsel them and INSTIST on the same from them. Hoping for the best is NEVER a leaders plan. Engage, counsel, couch, insist on the same standards you have now BEFORE you move on!
