#StoryTime Will Smith had an obsession in his childhood. Cowboy boots. He calls this obsession the cowboy-boot phase, in his memoir, Will. His love for cowboy boots was so extreme that he wore them with almost every dress. With jeans. With sweatsuits. Even with shorts. Other kids mercilessly made fun of his passion. But the more they made fun of him, the more his commitment to cowboy boots grew. I love this story for Will's readiness to ignore the rest. And carry on with his passion. Sometimes, you may not fit with others. Sometimes, you may appear a bit of an oddball like Will. But don't let others decide your love for a thing. The society always mocks those who don't fit in. It doesn’t accept the unconventional, but only later. But if everyone was made alike, would there be diversity? If everyone saw things from the same lens, would there be innovation? You aren’t an eccentric if you’re a nonconformist. You have a view that others don’t. You see what others fail to. You may not fit where they want you to. But without you, the world will be less creative. Less diverse. Less fun. So, carry on. #Nonconformist #Creativity #Innovation

A few years ago, a very well meaning lady told me that if I was going to appeal to the clients that I told her that I wanted, that I really needed to up my style game. Now, in her defense, this woman is the epoch of style. I love her style and I love style myself, but what I was missing and what I had told her was that my client, the person that I said I wanted to appeal to wasn't really who I wanted to appeal to. We didn't values align and the fact that I was constantly fighting with 'do I look right for that person? Do I act right for that person? Do I need to adjust myself?' I'm not talking about not having food on your shirt or you know, maybe just giving the hair a polish up or something like that. I'm talking about when you don't feel comfortable showing up as yourself in front of the people that you have said are your ideal clients. You've got major value misalignment problems. I know I did. How does having an European husband feel like? #𝟭 : He dresses WELL better than me. Even if we go to somewhere as plain as the supermarket. 🙈 His work attire? 👞 Italian leather shoes, custom-made navy blue suits, crisp-ironed shirts. Looking smart and lanky at 6 feet. Mine? 🍃 Go with the flow. Sometimes with makeup. Sometimes not. Looking okay put together at 5 feet 3. It cracks me up It's not about being vain. He is more aesthetics-conscious. #𝟮 : eating is all about peaceful etiquette. Our table is also decked with a white table cloth. Or with placemats. It took a few years for him to remind me how to set the table. 🍴 Knives on right. Forks on left. (As I'm terribly dyslexic with anything binary, Left/right + Fork/knife is perfect haywire in my head.) It's not about snobby. It's more like this peaceful backdrop to a family meal. #𝟯 : showing up as an equal. My husband changed the kids diapers. He got up in the middle of the night to tend to the kids. Just like I would. Like many Dutch parents, he takes an afternoon off during the work week to take care of the kids afterschool. It's not his career vs my career. Or his earning power vs mine. Joint parental responsibilities and fair game. Seeing culture can reveal the finer details of peacefulness, community and obligations.
