Besides that, it is interesting to hear these words from someone like Feynman, who was at the forefront of important, groundbreaking discoveries (and not by some people who are drowned in their egos and titles and probably not as prolific as him), questioning such titles and honors, that they might be superficial, it struck me that in the relatively recent history of human (compared to H. sapiens life), such honoring and titles in their current form are happening very very lately! Considering more than 2000 years of brilliant written history of science and philosophy, from Aristotle to Avecinna to Galileo to Newton, we have such titles only in our modern history! Are we commercializing everything, even in science? Or making up titles and awards day by day? And if yes, what is lacking (or, better say, fading away) inside us that we are compensating for by this? (It’s not innuendo; I am really seeking an answer!)

Whoop whoop! Proud Imperial alum this morning. With 3 of the top 5 (and 4 of the top 10) universities in the world, the UK’s academic institutions remain exceptional and a critical strategic asset to drive innovation in healthcare, technology, sustainability and the broader economy. Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL are also key incubators of the UK’s exceptional life sciences and tech start-ups. It’s important to aim for the stars, so that we land on the tree tops. A “little Julia” story (check out my first LinkedIn post for reference): Like every other child, every time before going to sleep I would daydream about my future. I would make up all sorts of happy and funny events. However, there is one dream which always stood out to me. It is not a happy daydream. Not a daydream we would expect a 10 year old to have. It was a stressful dream…but, also exciting. In my dream, I was stuck with choosing between the two best universities in the world. Each one was fighting for me. I remember the following days, I kept debating and arguing with myself over which one I would pick, and why… You might wonder why I would choose to add another stressor in my life. Why I would choose to waste my time stressing about a fictional situation, when real challenges, those of reading, writing and staying in school, had not yet be conquered. In my 10 year old mind, I wanted that future so much I was willing to make it my current reality. Which motivated me. Made me creative in my thinking and strategy. No one could tell me I wasn’t good enough, because in my world I was being fought over by the best. In October 2023, I started my second degree at Imperial. Supported by incredible professors and peers, I have been exploring the field of Surgical Robotics. Back then, we were ranked 6th in the world. Yesterday, Imperial College London was ranked second in the world. The best two institutions might not be fighting over me… yet. But I am attending the second best university in the world. In some ways, I feel like I have accomplished the essence of that dream. I am proud to be part of and contributing to, the thriving Imperial community.

Thrilled to also see the investments in AI and data science… Imperial College London’s major new initiative I-X will use artificial intelligence and data science to tackle global challenges. I-X harnesses the College’s long-standing excellence in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data sciences, and the many fields in science, engineering, medicine and business where they are applied. Its projects include developing new computational tools for improving image-based detection and diagnosis of disease, using AI to direct the design and implementation of new biological systems, and intelligent systems and networks for monitoring, control, and security of critical infrastructure. Other fields of research include human-AI cooperation, robotics and automation, and machine learning systems that understand the real world, such as self-driving vehicles.

Such a delight to attend BUILA yesterday, and a real pleasure to be able to deliver some thoughts on the vitally important subject of #TNE alongside a stellar panel of Annabelle Lee from Universities UK International, Dr Suzanna Tomassi from Department for Business and Trade and Lawrence DSouza from De Montfort University, excellently chaired by Stuart Easter from Edinburgh Napier University The latest data clearly illustrates that UK TNE volumes have once again climbed, with validated and franchised delivery, dual and joint awards still providing the lion's share of the TNE opportunity. TNE volumes from established markets such as China, Singapore and Sri Lanka continue to grow, Vietnam finally seems to be catching fire (after years of unfulfilled predictions) and a clutch of other less obvious markets are growing at an impressive rate. Lots of great content shared by the panel, and yet another indication that if TNE isn't front and centre of your institution's TNE agenda, and really should be!
