When I started using outdoor and experiential education as my primary approach to teaching high school I immediately saw the changes in my students' faces, their body language, and how they navigated and interacted with the world. I could see and sense in their interactions with the world the shift in what we now call 'mindset'. Back in the day, people would ask me how I knew that what I was doing with these teens would be effective, long-lasting, and have an impact. In short, they asked, "What is the evidence?" Back then, my stock response was to say "Ask me in 10 years, then we will know how they are doing and how we did." Here are two personal stories that demonstrate the power of outdoor education to change lives. Last week, I saw a post (linked below) about OBCA staff member Roger Lopez and the critical role he plays as a lead instructor for Outward Bound California. His life journey is inspirational and out on course he is a role model for his students. It is not a coincidence that Roger is an alum of Get Out and Learn (getoutandlearn.org), a high school experiential and outdoor education program in the SFUSD. His experiences in that program offered him the chance to go on Outward Bound, which turned the outdoors into a lifetime career and put him on the pathway toward becoming an outstanding OBCA staff member. Similarly, Belynda Ray is an alum of GOAPe, a predecessor program to GOAL. Her success in that program led her to become an OBCA Pinnacles scholar and a life-changing experience in the wilderness. Today, decades later, Roger and Belynda continue to pay it forward to the next generation. The partnership between OBCA and community organizations give youth like Belynda and Roger the opportunity to go on life-changing experiences with Outward Bound California. None of this is possible without the scholarships OBCA offers. IT IS individual donations that make what seems financially impossible, possible. The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter has been hosting listening sessions for GTA fundraisers. The sessions are an opportunity to share your experiences with the association and to help co-create a future that is inclusive, meaningful and relevant for the membership. As an interim board member my role has been to facilitate discussion, welcome folks into the space, contribute as appropriate, and most importantly listen. I am appreciative to those who have shared their past interactions and their future aspirations for the association. There has been hurt. That we must acknowledge and address. There is also hope. Hope for a future of community and connection. There are more listening sessions organized for March 1 and March 15. This is what you can expect: 🔹 We will share in advance the questions we will ask so you feel prepared. 🔹 Your name will not be attributed to any specific comment or statement – all feedback is considered anonymous. 🔹 The interim board welcomes open, honest feedback. The path forward is through transparency.   🔹 Following the listening sessions, the interim board will incorporate what we learned into the work of the association. 🔹 There is no cost. 🔹 The sessions are open all GTA fundraisers and fundraising consultants - you don't have to be a current or past member to attend. 🔹 Light refreshments will be provided at in person sessions. Let’s look to a brighter future - the Galloway National Park consultation is due to start this week. A National Park would help bring together communities, businesses, nature charities and many others to build a brighter common future for Galloway and areas of south and east Ayrshire that are beautiful but have suffered major decline. The NatureScot consultation into the proposed Galloway National Park, which could bring many millions of pounds a year of Scottish Government funding to the region, is due to begin on 7 November. Sandra McDowall, Vice Chair of GNPA, said: “This is a chance for all of us to build a brighter future - to achieve something amazing for our region. “A Galloway National Park would attract large amounts of direct funding and inward investment for our environment, our economy and – of huge importance – would help us create a better future for our children. “We want to see as many people as possible getting involved with the public consultation as this is their chance not just to win National Park status, but to shape the park and how it is run to suit the needs of the region. “With so much doom and gloom in the world at the moment it’s brilliant to have something so positive available to us – especially as it means more of the money paid by local taxpayers is invested back in our area.” The idea for a Galloway National Park dates back to a Dumfries and Galloway Council report in 2016, after which local people came together to form the GNPA, which has been campaigning ever since. Sandra said: “It’s an idea born and bred in Galloway, by Galloway residents. And now we want to see a Park developed that is shaped by the people and the needs of our region.” As part of the consultation process 16 meetings have already been announced.
