Can the "power of the connnectivity mix" transform health tech? This was the question asked last night at the unveiling of the 'Ecosystem Insight' report from Connect: Health Tech. Health tech has many of the same issues as other tech ecosystems in the journey from lab to market, and yet also has its own issues. Our host, the delectable Paula Rogers-Brown, Head of Communities & Ecosystem Engagement, introduced the report and then Uday Phadke from Triple Chasm talked about ecosystems and the need for building robust business models for commercialisation and scaling (topics close to my heart!). We then had a panel discussion, with an eclectic range of people, which made for a lively discussion: Uday Phadke, Simon Thorpe from Cambridge Angels and now Manchester University Innovation Factory, Kathryn Chapman from Babraham Research Campus and Innovate Cambridge, Zickie Lim from our host Mills & Reeve, and Daniel Rooke of Start Codon. A few of my thoughts on the evening: • All three Cs: capital, culture and community (stolen brazenly from Simon here, thank you) are required to establish and maintain a thriving ecosystem in the health tech world. We touched a little more here on the north-south divide, and how humility and a willingness to learn, whether the knowledge is flowing up or down the country, is essential. • People, papers and patents: is the firm rooting of health tech in academia preventing successful commercialisation more than just the requirement for funding is? With a focus on publishing papers and getting named in patent applications, how strong is the drive for some to leave academia and pursue a commercial career, or is it possible to balance both? • Top down vs. bottom up: rather than trying to implement huge nationwide (or beyond) initiatives, success is more likely to come from one project at a time, one introduction at a time, one meeting at a time. The Cambridge-Manchester strategic partnership is one such example. And while one cannot engineer serendipity, how can we make sure we develop an atmosphere that is conducive to conversation? After the presentations and panel discussion, it was then lovely to meet some new people and catch up with, er, old people, in the networking session: Ming-Tsung (Louis) Wu, Clarice Benney, Deborah Dawson, Simone Castello and Lynne Trowbridge to name a few. The Connect Health Tech 'The Connectivity Mix' report discusses support for SMEs, regional basis, risk aversion, talent acquisition, regulatory issues, the need for a common language, and more. What an inspiring startupdays event in Berne yesterday! 🌟 One of the highlights for me: the thought-provoking presentation by Prof. Stuart Russell on beneficial AI. 🤖 He introduced the concept of "provably beneficial AI," which should work as an assistance and ... ... Be deferent to humans ... Ask permission ... Not show invasive behavior ... Be okay or even willing to be switched off Maybe it is a bit late to 🤖 make AI safe versus making safe AI 🤖. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to Russell’s next insights, as he mentioned he's actively working exactly on that. 🌐 On a personal note, it was wonderful to reconnect - amongst others - with Hans Hess. After a distinguished career in the corporate world, he is now making significant strides in clean energy as the Chairman of the Board at Synhelion. 🌍⚡ While technology alone cannot solve the climate crisis, its pivotal role cannot be denied. So I hope companies like Synhelion will succeed in their mission to replace fossil fuels with carbon-neutral solar fuels. ☀️
