In the ConservES project, eight partner organizations from four countries are working together to assess the benefits of hedgerows and flowering strips 🌺 as habitats for pollinators and natural enemies of pests and weeds 🐝🐞. We would like to introduce you to the partner organizations one by one, starting with ECOBIO. 🌱 The ECOBIO team with Joan Van Baaren from the University of Rennes, France, is coordinating the ConservES project 🌍. Their team includes scientists, lecturers, students, and collaborators from the University of Rennes and CNRS. Actually, of course, ecology is not packaged goods for sale over the counters of human commerce. Its value, despite its limited span of the known-to-unknown, resides in the commerce between the mind and the natural world. More than simply an intellectual pastime, coming to know ecology in principle and discovering the ways of specific ecological systems become guides for planetary survival... The frame of reference for any living environment is the ecosystem at that place. Whatever organisms (plants, animals, and microbes) interact with each other and with their physical surroundings, look for an ecosystem in action... [and] each local ecosystem is part of a larger ecosystem... At any place along that continuum, we may put an arbitrary boundary around a specific area and look at it as an ecosystem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Professor in Landscape Architecture Maria Ignatieva has recently co-authored an article published in the Urban Ecosystems journal titled ‘Urban biodiversity and design in time of (post)pandemics: research perspectives from URBIO international network’. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This article is about the research development within Urban Biodiversity and Design Network (URBIO) and discusses the consequences of current global changes (ongoing urbanisation, biodiversity loss, land-use changes, globalisation, etc.) to the emergence and outbreaks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Great conversation last night on Radical Regeneration and Deep Ecology hosted by Village Well with Gilbert Rochecouste and John Seed 🌱👏 The organising principle is this question – does this nourish life? Making that the foundation for everything we do, deep ecology dispels the illusion of separation between ourselves and connects us to the living Earth 🌏 Radical Regeneration is about the need for a new narrative and practical hope. Grounded in Country and the depth of wisdom and insight that Fist Nations perspectives offer– cultural vitality and regeneration. The importance of nature. That regeneration is about giving out more than we take out. Radical is about being brave and leveraging the power of imagination, about embracing joy and culture 🌞 Public space and the commons - appreciating the value of the local - are at the core of regenerative practice. That regeneration practitioners are about communities and connection recognising that loneliness is hugely problematic. That communities are searching for meaning and aliveness, something bigger than themselves 👬👭👫🌳 That social housing can bring ecological and social justice working together – that social justice is a driver of systems 🏡 How we live together is key – there’s a new narrative of community governance with initiatives like transition towns in Australia and Regen Melbourne – Melbourne could be the world’s first regenerative city. Reclaiming waterways, regenerative streets enabling zero carbon that are community focused and community empowered 🙌 How we mobilise councils to help them step up – make them place-led (rather than engineering-led or planning-led) - and how to extend to State government too 💡 The philosophy of deep ecology began with a Norwegian academic Arne Nauss which argued that so many of our problems were the result of our human-centred ness or anthropocentricity – living to subdue and dominate nature 💦 #regeneration

In 2023 , Spolek absolventů a přátel zemědělské školy v Chrudimi, z.s. became a partner of an interesting Polish project called the European Urban Ecology Academy (EURECA), in which other partners from Italy, Portugal and southern Spain are also involved. The goal of the project is to increase the competence of trainers working in the field of informal education on the topic of urban ecology by 2050 using best practices of urban activities leading to the improvement of conditions. According to estimates, two-thirds of the world's population will live in urbanized areas by 2050, so the topic under investigation is key to climate change. Knowledge of effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in cities can be implemented either through local policies, the activities of non-governmental organizations, but also through the activities of individuals. Last year, as part of the project activities, an introductory meeting took place between November 6 and 10, 2023 in Lisbon. Representatives of the five partner countries discussed tasks for the next phases of the project, which will last until February 2025, in a comprehensive program. The participants had the opportunity to see places and facilities that are examples of good ecological approaches of the city of Lisbon, which was declared the European Green Capital in 2020. The meeting included a conference with Portuguese stakeholders and experts dealing with several topics of urban ecology, such as: the urban economy and its relation to organization and spatial planning; integrated sustainable innovation models that apply climate change mitigation and adaptation measures together with local development and social inclusion of minority groups.

Seed priming techniques have shown immense potential in enhancing seed germination and seedling establishment, ultimately contributing to the restoration and conservation of vital ecosystems. I am deeply grateful to my collaborators and mentors whose invaluable support and guidance have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. This achievement underscores our collective commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the editorial board and reviewers for their rigorous evaluation and constructive feedback, which have undoubtedly strengthened the quality and impact of our work.
