The lack of transparency in agricultural algorithms affects the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). For SDG 12: - Transparent algorithms help farmers make informed decisions, preventing resource waste and environmental harm. - They ensure traceability and accountability in food production, promoting sustainable practices. For SDG 10: - Transparent, open-source algorithms provide equitable access to technology for smallholder and marginalized farmers, reducing inequalities. - Opaque algorithms can reinforce power imbalances, favoring large agribusinesses and exacerbating economic disparities in agriculture. Finding the right balance between transparency and the protection of business integrity is challenging. While transparency is essential for sustainable practices and equity, businesses must also safeguard their proprietary information to maintain competitive advantages.
