𝐌𝐨𝐀𝐋 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - A pillar towards nation's development and priorities. The #agriculture and #livestock sector which roughly employs 43.5 percent of the nation’s population is among the sectors highly vulnerable to climate change and its impacts. Extreme weather events, pests and diseases, change in vegetation and ecological vulnerabilities were among the major impacts discussed at the three-day workshop on ‘Scaling-up livestock climate action to enhance nationally determined contributions phase II’ at Paro. Working in 2.75 percent of arable land, the primary sector contributed 14.67 percent in 2022—a decline from 38 percent in 1992. Participants discussed the institutional arrangements, policies, data availability, and discussed the long lasting challenges and opportunities for implementing livestock mitigation and adaptation measures. Climate finance opportunities and capacity development needs for the workers were also discussed. The livestock sector contributes the highest to the greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane gas from ruminants like cattle, sheep, and goats, posing an environmental threat. The 13th Plan document of the MoAL highlights that, the DoL will prioritise: promotion of large-scale commercial farming; enhancing support for subsistence farming to improve livelihoods and ensure food security; promotion of high-value products for export markets; enhancing ecosystem services for sustainable and resilient biodiversity initiatives; and improving the governance mechanism to enhance the business ecosystem. To align food production with climate goals, sustainable practices are required to reduce emissions from livestock farming. In Bhutan, strategies include improving feed quality to lower methane emissions, promoting better livestock management, and enhancing breeding programmes. Experts from various fields including facilitators from the FAO Headquarters highlighted the potential of breed improvement to increase cattle productivity, reduce herd sizes, and lower emissions. The project, implemented by the department of livestock, aligns with Bhutan’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement and reflects the country’s commitment to sustainable solutions that support both the environment and farmers. Some of the key highlights and takeaways from the course: - Exploring Genetics for Livestock Improvement: Gained insights into how we can leverage molecular selection to improve economically important traits in tropical livestock breeds. 🧬 - Precision & Smart Farming Technologies: Explored how digital innovations and smart farm technologies are revolutionizing agriculture, with a focus on optimizing production efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. 🚜🌱 - Sustainable Dairy and Meat Production: From the importance of precision animal nutrition to enhancing animal welfare, the course covered strategies for improving productivity in an environmentally responsible way. 🐄🥛 - Climate Change and Food Safety: Discussed how climate change affects sustainability in livestock farming and emerging food safety hazards. 🌍💡 - Manure Management & Feed Industry Trends: Learned from global best practices on managing livestock waste and the latest feed formulation techniques to improve both animal health and farm profitability. 🌾 With over 90 hours of intensive learning, group work, and practical insights, I earned an A grade and 2 credit units in the Indonesian Credit System. Here's why it matters: Digestibility Levels: -Crop by-products: 45-55% -Managed pastures, preserved forages, grain-supplemented forage-based diets: 55-80% -Grain-based diets in feedlots: 72-85% Low digestibility leads to lower feed intake but higher methane production per unit of milk. High digestibility, on the other hand, enhances feed intake and milk production, reducing methane emissions per unit of milk produced. It's important to note that forage digestibility decreases with the maturity of plants, especially during hot weather or dry seasons. My opinion about sustainable intensification in livestock production is that the increase in human population will translate to increase in demand for animal products. Consequently, producers are expected to either increase production (keeping more stock) or increase productivity ( improve breed and management system) Increase in production will increase the pressure on demand for natural resources ( water and feed ) which will impact on the environment both climate and human-health inter-phase. Increase in productivity which includes precision genetic and feeding/management improvement is key. Adopting the strategy of re-circulatory production system, integrated crop-livestock systems and circular economy will maximize productivity.
