Sam Donohoe proclaimed a Great Leader in the History of the Australian Parliament Hi everyone, My beautiful, adventurous and super loving son Sam passed away at just 12 years. He was diagnosed with an aggressive, malignant and inoperable brain tumour at 9 years of age. Sam has been officially proclaimed one of the greatest leaders and awarded a place in the history of the Australian Parliament. His legacy to humanity is profound. Sam is himself, integrity and love. He dealt with the magnitude of relentless difficulties with supreme dignity and joy. Sam easily ignited everyone in his presence. His belief in others, love of adventure, risk, insight, care, optimism, hope and laughter brimmed constantly. Sam led deeply by example, despite the tumour relentlessly decimating him. The actual model is what I only share when I present it, or when it is integrated. My deep wish and personal soul purpose, is that communications are significantly improved between doctors, parents and patients worldwide. To unify, not divide. In addition, that our communities, media and educators be aware that parental/sibling grief must not framed by what society's own biases or expectations are, as it causes endless pain for families. The reality is far from what you can ever imagine. My background is as an RN and also Communications Specialist/Journalist. However, nothing and I mean nothing, gives you this knowledge except life experience and enduring this tragedy. To all parents who are going through this or also enduring...my heart is still beating right alongside yours. You are not alone. Ever.

About a month ago Gov. Green signed an executive order declaring Hawai'i as a "Trauma Informed State." The smart, passionate humans behind this huge effort have worked very hard for a very long time; to witness this is nothing less than mind-blowing. Although momentous, it is a landmark for much more work to come. But it is good work. Work that is incredibly critical to the health and wellbeing of our island home. Hawai'i is the first in the nation to take steps towards state-wide implementation of culturally grounded trauma-informed frameworks that consider historical trauma including the trauma of colonization. Hawai'i is unique in so many ways. Her people possess great strength and beauty, but unfortunately also carry deep generational trauma in their bones. Part of this work includes the distribution of a statewide survey. The hope is that as many Hawai'i residents will take this survey as possible. Data can tell us powerful stories and inform our futures. Please go to the link in my bio (or below) to participate. "The Unofficial Guide to Surviving Life: Why Everyone Needs a Primary Care Physician" As a physician, I’ve come to the conclusion that life, in its essence, is a lot like trying to assemble furniture from a very famous Swedish company: It seems simple at first, until you realize you’re left with an extra screw, or maybe it feels some screws are missing, and you have an instruction manual that’s as clear as mud. This, my friends, is where primary care physicians (PCPs) come in - consider us the human equivalent of that friend who actually reads the instructions. First and foremost, let’s address the elephant in the room: Google. Ah, Google, the place where a simple search for “headache” can escalate to “I have a rare tropical disease” in 0.03 seconds. While Dr. Google can offer an array of frightening diagnoses, your PCP offers something Google can’t - sanity. We’re here to navigate the complex symphony of sniffles, sprains, and those “I swear I was just dancing” injuries, all without a single ad for miracle cures popping up. Now, onto the subject of 'adulting'. It’s a term as endearing as it is horrifying. Adulting involves responsibilities like paying bills, remembering to take out the trash, and ensuring you’re not subsisting on a diet exclusively composed of coffee and instant noodles. Your PCP is like the Gandalf of your adulting journey, guiding you through the perilous paths of health maintenance, disease prevention, and reminding you that, yes, even adults need vaccinations. Think of us as your personal health navigators on the choppy seas of adulthood. We also specialize in the art of translation - not from French to English, but from Medical Jargon to Human Speak. Ever tried reading a lab report? It’s like deciphering an ancient script. With a PCP, you get your own Rosetta Stone, turning phrases like “elevated serum triglycerides” into “You might want to cut back on the fast food.” Let’s not forget the most important part: continuity of care. In a world where binge-watching a TV series is a commitment, having a PCP means there’s someone keeping track of your health narrative. We’re like the showrunners for the series that is your health, ensuring the plot doesn’t thicken with unexpected twists (like diabetes or hypertension) and keeping all the characters (i.e., specialists) in check. In conclusion, if life were a game of Jenga, your PCP would be the steady hand, making sure the whole tower doesn’t come crashing down every time a new block is added. So, the next time you’re contemplating whether you need a primary care physician, remember: It’s better to have a guide through the IKEA of life, helping you assemble a sturdy foundation for your health, rather than going it alone and ending up with a lopsided bookshelf that collapses at the slightest touch.
