“What if gratitude could transform the way we do business? “ Professor Walt Clements is asking questions that will lead to a path of growing the good in business. This is one of the many amazing ways we are challenged in this program at University of Notre Dame - Mendoza College of Business. A highlight of this last residency was hearing Nate Zolman’s story. He shared his EMBA journey and how quickly he was able to put the classroom lessons into action in his business. Nate holds his employees and customers in the highest regard and is a shining example of being Tender, Strong, and True. This Thanksgiving I am grateful for my family, my friends both new and old, and this opportunity I am fortunate enough to be part of. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍁 🦃 #growthegoodinbusiness #TenderStrongTrue

What if gratitude could transform the way we do business? Yes, life sure has its challenges 🤔. But, those of you who know me, I hope agree that I am a “glass is half full” person: while I strive to be better and do more, I am mostly thankful. Thankful for my family, my faith, the many incredible experiences I have had during my career, especially with my students at the University of Notre Dame - Mendoza College of Business . I am thankful for these relationships in which I gain so much. Last week Nate Zolman , CEO of Zolman’s Best One Tire & Auto Care , joined my Global Executive MBA - Corporate Finance class for breakfast and spent the first hour speaking to my class. He is a Notre Dame Executive MBA Class ’22 Alumni, and Zolman’s network of 12 tire, car and commercial truck repair locations in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan has 250 employees. Nate has not only grown his business considerably in recent years but also shared with the class how he achieved this growth and how his experiences in the Executive MBA program have contributed to his success. I invited Nate to speak to my class because he and his business are excellent examples of a topic we had recently covered- The topic focused on the purpose of business and the overarching objectives that drive nearly every organization, whether a for-profit or a nonprofit company. Nate exemplifies the concept of "Growing the Good in Business" through initiatives like creating scholarships for local high school students and supporting Habitat for Humanity. What stood out to me most is how Nate continues to embody Notre Dame’s mission of balancing personal success with a commitment to others. His journey reflects the five objectives of any business, which are at the heart of the Mendoza College of Business’ mantra “Grow the Good in Business”: 1️⃣ Maximize value to stakeholders 2️⃣ Be a preferred employer 3️⃣ Be a positive force in the community 4️⃣ Leave the environment better than we found it 5️⃣ Operate with ethics and integrity These objectives are intertwined, with each one enabling the achievement of the others. A company can best maximize value to stakeholders by also excelling in the other four areas. Thank you, Nate, for sharing your experiences with my class, inspiring us all, and for the meaningful impact you and your organization have on the community. I love the impact teaching has and the joy of staying connected with those who inspire me. This is one of the many things I am thankful for during this U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday. Now, as I set my work aside, I will spend time reveling in my favorite F’s: Family, Faith, Food, Football and the Fighting Irish of University of Notre Dame ! I wish you and your families all the best.
