Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women who have served our country. Yet, we must also remember that the journey doesn’t end when they come home. For too many, the transition to civilian life is marked by challenges that no hero should face alone. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, over 33,000 veterans are homeless on any given night across our nation. Nearly 1.1 million face food insecurity, struggling to put meals on their tables. Here in DC, a staggering 13.5% of the population reports not having enough food to eat. These statistics remind us that while their service may have ended, our duty to them has not. At the Mission, we take a whole-person approach to support veterans, providing emergency shelter, nutritious meals, workforce training, and comprehensive recovery programs. Each night, up to 25 veterans find safe refuge in our shelter—at no cost—as they work towards rebuilding their lives. Through partnerships, social services, and educational opportunities, we empower them to overcome obstacles and achieve sustainable independence. Over 10% of those we serve are veterans, and with a yearly expense of $750,000 dedicated to direct support, we rely on the generosity of individuals to continue this vital mission. Every day, 17 Veterans lose their lives to suicide—a heartbreaking statistic that demands our immediate attention. These are our heroes, our friends, and our family members, and we owe it to them to take action now. As clinicians, it is our duty to have those tough conversations. Asking direct questions like "Have you thought about killing yourself?" can make all the difference. It's a difficult question, but one that could save a life. Utilizing the ASQ (Ask Suicide-Screening Questions) assessment during every intake can help identify those at risk and ensure they receive the support they need. Thanking veterans isn’t enough. Here's the real issue. We say "thank you for your service" all the time. And it’s important. But here’s what Chris Nelson, CEO of Freedom Service Dogs of America, pointed out: We’re not taking care of them after. How can we celebrate veterans while letting their suicide rate soar? It’s a disconnect between words and action. So, what’s the solution? 1. Start by creating real support networks. 2. Stop treating "thank you" as a solution. 3. Listen and act. The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide’s release of "Shining a Light - Stories of Trauma, Tragedy & Hope" marks a significant step in sharing the experiences of our veterans and their families. At the Families of Veterans Guild (FOVG), we believe that this collection of lived experiences should drive profound and necessary changes. We want to see a fundamental system transformation. For too long, we've been addressing symptoms rather than solving underlying issues. Every actor in this system, whether governmental or non-governmental, must take responsibility for making meaningful changes. We call for pathways to support families of veterans that are currently lacking. Investment in the veteran community sector is essential to build capacity, drive innovation, and foster partnerships that can support our families effectively. We need an independent body to oversee these changes and ensure accountability, as we cannot fail those who have bravely shared their stories. We pay tribute to those who served with unwavering courage and sacrifice, remembering their dedication and valor. Today and every day, we express our gratitude to our veterans for safeguarding our freedom. 🇺🇸 Many of our nation’s veterans face housing insecurity after serving our country. According to The results of the 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count showed that, in 2023, 35,574 Veterans in Texas (or 22 of every 10,000 Veterans in the United States) were experiencing homelessness, a 7.4% increase from 2022. Looking more closely, at an astonishing 97.6%, nearly all Veterans in Texas were experiencing homelessness. This highlights the urgent need for safe, affordable housing solutions that provide stability and support. As we honor veterans, let’s also advocate for accessible housing opportunities for those who have sacrificed so much.
