Q1’s $4.3B Over 219 Investments/M&As Marks a Positive Start to 2024 Excluding Microsoft’s $68.7B acquisition of Activision Blizzard in Q4 as an outlier, Q1 2024’s $4.3B across 219 investments and M&As nearly doubles Q4 2023’s $2.3B in value Despite game industry layoffs and business turmoil, investments and M&As show a return to cautious growth. When comparing Q1 2024 to Q4 2023, Q1 2024 is a significant decline (-94% in value and +13% in volume compared to Q4’s $70.1B across 194 transactions) but excluding Microsoft’s $68.7B acquisition of Activision Blizzard in Q4 as an outlier, Q1 2024’s $4.3B across 219 investments and M&As nearly doubles Q4 2023’s $2.3B in value, indicating a positive start to 2024. Microsoft’s $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard faces this weekend its biggest test yet with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as a Game Pass day-one exclusive. This debut is a major strategic milestone for Game Pass, with Microsoft hoping it will drive subscriptions despite recent price hikes and other adjustments. I will be part of probably millions of gamers that will renew a subscription that was left in the dust for a few months to enjoy the new COD along the rest of the catalogue. I am not entirely convinced by this business model, especially when Steam does crazy sales two times a year. A platform where the price of games can be very affordable, where online play is free, and I usually don't play enough different games to benefit from the full Game Pass potential. Ultimately, Black Ops 6’s performance will signal whether the Game Pass model can sustain blockbuster launches and shape the direction of Microsoft’s gaming strategy for years to come. Gaming Industry SHAKEUP Hits Activision Blizzard HARD 🎮🔥😢 Activision Blizzard is laying off 400 employees across its Irvine, Santa Monica, and Playa Vista offices by the end of the year as part of Microsoft's global cost-cutting measures. After acquiring Activision Blizzard in a $69 billion deal, Microsoft announced that 3% of its global gaming workforce, or 650 employees, will be affected by these cuts. This includes 140 employees in Irvine, 110 in Santa Monica, and 143 in Playa Vista. The layoffs will mostly impact corporate roles such as IT, recruiting, and human resources.
