THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE Strength in numbers. During a dinner conversation, friends Butch Whitfield, a realtor at Harry Norman Realtors; Liz Lapidus, founder of Liz Lapidus Strategic Communications; and Johanna Ellis-Reisinger, former owner of Atlanta Classic Cars began discussing their favorite nonprofits and how to enhance their impact. “Our goal was to develop a shared vision to guide the region’s conservation efforts,” says Whitfield. The result was Root Local that began with polling 250 environmental groups to test their interest. “We got responses from all the six sectors we identified: food systems, air and water quality management, canopy and land management, green buildings and practices, sustainable fashion and products, and travel and transportation,” says Whitfield. Using those replies, they developed a Network Map, a Collective Impact Plan and The Pollinator Network where online community members and organizations can come together to share ideas and learn how to become better stewards of the environment. “Interested citizens can register online and choose the sector that interests them most, whether its green buildings or sustainable fashion,” Whitfield says. 🌳 We're excited to share an update from our Monday volunteering group, who yesterday planted a disease-resistant elm tree (an Ulmus ‘Columella') at Waterloo Green as part of the Public Metropolitan Gardens Association's Elms4London initiative. 🌱 This meaningful project seeks to reintroduce elm trees to London's green spaces - many were lost to Dutch Elm Disease decades ago. 🍃 By planting this resilient tree, we're not only enhancing the urban landscape but also contributing to carbon sequestration and air quality improvement. With the potential to reach heights of up to 30m and live for over a century, this elm represents a sustainable investment in our community's future. 🌿 But the benefits extend far beyond aesthetics 🦋 Our new elm tree will boost the Green's biodiversity hub as it supports the white-letter hairstreak butterfly ('Satyrium w-album') by providing forage for its caterpillars. Additionally, the elm's seeds are a vital food source for many birds and small mammals. This initiative showcases the power of collaboration between communities and environmental organisations in driving positive change. For more than a century, the Saw Mill River in Westchester County, NY, has been plagued by pollution, putting both public health and the environment at risk. But now, community initiatives have revitalized the site, turning it into a thriving and vibrant green space. ✅ Groundwork Hudson Valley and the City of Yonkers are working together to bring the river back, letting it flow freely and restoring the ecosystem for cleaner urban water, thriving native species, and community enjoyment. These improvements are already making a difference in some areas, but there is still more to do. Cleaning up the Saw Mill River depends on everyone pitching in - from the community lending a hand to government support and ongoing water quality monitoring. It's my 4th day in a row working with corporate volunteer groups to clean up litter on Belle Isle. Each day we left it spotless, and each day we found even more trash. We are finding less each day, but we are still finding quite a bit. I am visiting the same spots and finding the same beer cans, vape cartridges, and other trash each day. We get an influx of corporate volunteer groups around Earth Day and it is my favorite time of year. I love getting to meet new people and help them develop a stronger relationship with the James River Park System. I think it is especially cool that so many of our local corporate partners come out to show their support for the Park. The JRPS is for everyone, and not everyone has the same understanding of the value of our parks and how these spaces are made possible. It is really easy to get discouraged or feel like this work is futile when you clean up what seems like the same Twisted Tea can in the same part of the park every day for a week. There is a lot of concern about the JRPS being "loved to death" and I worry that Belle Isle is becoming a good example of that. We need to do more to instill a culture of sustainability in our park users. I think that begins with showing people what responsible park use looks like, across all cultures. I think the good can outweigh the bad if we all strive to leave our shared public spaces better than they were when we got there. Hundreds of people showed to demonstrate that was possible this week, and that is why I am optimistic that we can create a better JRPS for everyone. Learn more- jamesriverpark.org
